SAN ANTONIO – The 12th-ranked Trinity baseball team closed out its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with a 9-2 loss to Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers fell to 11-5 this season with the loss, while the Pirates are now 8-10 on the year. Trinity did win the regular season series between the two teams, though, after winning 5-2 and 8-5 in the first two games.
Trinity fell behind early in the game as Southwestern scored twice in both the second and third innings. That proved to be more than enough, as the Tigers struggled to score runs despite finishing with 10 hits in the game. Trinity had baserunners in all but two innings – one of which was a 1-2-3 ninth after Southwestern had already pretty much put the game away by scoring at least once in each of the final four frames. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but failed to score in a 2-0 game at the time. Trinity also stranded two runners in the fifth and sixth when the lead was four runs or fewer.
Trinity ended up using seven different pitchers, with
Michael Boeke (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) taking the loss and falling to 1-2 this season.
Zach Balbin (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) was the only Tiger hurler that pitched more than one inning without allowing a run. He pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, giving up just two hits and striking out a pair of batters.
Three players accounted for most of Trinity's offensive output, led by a 3-for-5 performance from
Alex Monson (Houston, Texas / Memorial).
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) had two hits in the game, while
Korson Hastings (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly to drive in one of the two runs on the day.
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) came off the bench to pick up a hit and drive in the other run.
