SAN ANTONIO – The 14th-ranked Trinity men's tennis team scored a 6-3 win over top-ranked Emory University (GA) on Friday afternoon at the
Butch Newman Tennis Center.
The Tigers improved to 7-6 on the season with the win, handing Emory (8-2) just its second loss of the season. It is Trinity's first win in the series against the Eagles since the 2015 season, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Emory got the first point of the day at #1 doubles, defeating the Tiger team of
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) and
Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep) 8-4. Trinity's line two team of
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and
Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) then knotted things up with an 8-6 win.
Rob Chang (Aiea, Hawaii / 'Iolani School) and
Dalton Locke (Humble, Texas / Kingwood) were in the midst of a battle at line three doubles, which the Tigers pulled out in the end with an 8-7 (7-3) tiebreaker victory.
Trinity's 2-1 lead after doubles was short-lived as Emory picked up the first singles win at line two to tie things up. Liao followed that with a big straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win at line six to put Trinity back in front. The doubles team of Flores and Perry that got Trinity's first point then got singles points of their own to clinch the match for the Tigers. Flores came off first with a line five win at 6-2, 6-2. Perry then got the clincher at #1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4. Emory broke up Trinity's streak with a win at line three, but Dhanani closed the match with comeback win at line four. Dhanani lost the opening set 6-4, but rallied to win 7-5 in the second to force a super tiebreaker – which he won with a score of 10-7 to send the Tigers out on another win.
