SAN ANTONIO – The 17th-ranked Trinity baseball team picked up an 11-5 home win over DeSales University on Thursday night.
The Tigers improved to 6-3 this season with the win, while DeSales fell to 4-7 on the year. This is the eighth consecutive win in the series for Trinity, dating back to the 2012 season.
Michael Boeke (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) enjoyed a career night as Trinity's starter, allowing just one run on two hits over 6.2 innings, and striking out a career-high 15 batters to improve his record to 1-1 this season. He struck out the side for three straight innings from the third to the fifth, stranding two base runners in both the third and fourth innings to preserve the shutout at the time.
Trinity's offense got going with a three-run third inning to take the lead.
Jack Baker (Sugar Land, Texas / Ridge Point) walked with one out, then he went on two record two stolen bases.
Pierce Matthews (Carrollton, Texas / Hebron) also walked and stole two bases and both players came around to score.
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) drove Baker in with an infield single after Baker and Matthews executed a double-steal. McDonald and Matthews got another double-steal to give Trinity five stolen bases in the inning.
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) drove in Matthews with a single up the middle, then
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) reached on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0.
DeSales picked up a single and a walk with one out in the top of the fourth, then both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Boeke slammed the door shut with two strikeouts, though, to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) got a bunt single with one out to jump-start the bottom of the inning, then stole second and third to score easily on a double down the left field line from
Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif. / Grace Brethren). Baker promptly drove in Tinker with a hit of his own to make it a 5-0 Tiger lead. Lazzara picked up two more RBI with a single down the right field line to close out the scoring and put Trinity ahead 7-0.
Boeke struck out the side in the sixth, then picked up his final strikeout before leaving the game in the seventh. DeSales broke up the shutout with a pair of hits in the inning to make it a 7-1 game, but Trinity's offense had an answer in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers loaded the bases with two walks and an error, then scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Matthews then pushed Trinity into double digits with a three-run homer over the wall in left to make it an 11-1 game.
DeSales combined four hits with an error, a walk, and two wild pitches to match Trinity's four-run seventh to cut the lead to 11-5. Tiger reliever
Sheppard Tyler (Austin, Texas / Anderson) shut the door on the inning with a three-pitch strikeout to strand two runners on base. Tyler pitched around two walks and a hit in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to finish off the win.
Matthews finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored and was one of three Tigers to record two steals. Lazzara went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Tinker and Baker scored two runs each. Baker and Peterson joined Matthews with two steals.
