SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 12th-ranked baseball team suffered a 1-0 loss to the University of Dallas in the opening game of a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series on Friday night.
The Tigers dropped to 25-9 this season, as well as 12-4 in conference play. Dallas improved to 20-11 overall and 8-7 in SCAC. The loss snaps a 27-game win streak for Trinity against the Crusaders, with the previous win coming in the 2014 season.
Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / Alexander) struck out 11 batters in 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits, and getting saddled with the loss to fall to 7-1.
Will Hellings (Summit, N.J. / Summit) allowed just one hit over the final two innings, and struck out four batters.
The Tiger offense managed just three hits in the game, while Dallas picked up its first base runner in the fourth inning. A leadoff double by the Crusaders broke up the no-hit bid by Chavana, then stole third base prior to a walk that put runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Dallas then got a run-scoring single to take the lead. Chavana then induced an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.
Max Milligan (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) had the first hit of the night for Trinity in the third inning, then
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) followed with a hit of his own in the fourth. That was the only base runner for Trinity for the rest of the game, except for a two-out single by
Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif. / Grace Brethren) in the seventh inning.
