No. 9 Tiger Baseball Snags Series Opener Against Centenary

SHREVEPORT, LA - No. 9 Tiger Baseball edges Centenary in game one of their final regular season series on Friday night.

The Tigers (29-9) took game one by a score of 6-3. Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / J.B. Alexander) got the win on the mound by going six complete innings while giving up two earned runs, bringing his season ERA to 1.64. Will Hellings (Summit, New Jersey / Summit) earned his fifth save of the season as he went three shutout innings and fanned five hitters. Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) went 2-3 at the plate and collected a double and two RBIs. Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) was the only other Tiger hitter with a multi-hit game. Holloway also added two hits in four at bats with a double and three RBIs. Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) and Jack Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) also had extra-base hits as Baker had a double and McDonald hit a bomb. The Tigers move to 38-20 all time against the Gents.

How It Happened

Trinity got it going early when Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) smoked a single to center field. Harris followed that up with a single to right and put the first runner in scoring position for the Tigers. Holloway didn't care where runners were on the base paths, however, because he roped a double to right, brought in both runners, and TU was up 2-0 after the first half. Centenary answered with a lead off homer but that's all they would get.

Both teams stayed quiet in the second but that would change in the following inning. In the third, Peterson reached on an error, Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, California / Palos Verdes Peninsula) legged out an infield single, and momentum swung to the Tigers. Harris stepped up and brought in both runners with a double to left center but Holloway wanted to lead the team in RBIs so he zipped a ball to center to bring in Harris. Chavana put up a goose egg in the bottom of the inning and Trinity extended the lead to 5-1. After Centenary put one up in the fourth, it was a donut fest until the seventh.

The Gents scratched another in the seventh and were looking to ride the momentum in the back half of the game. CC would threaten on the bases, but Hellings made pitches when it mattered. In the ninth, McDonald sent one into the night sky, and back, back, back it went… OVER THE SCOREBOARD! Tigers take a 6-3 lead into the final half. Hellings did not let the door crack open as he struck out the side and Trinity took game one, 6-3.
