Tiger Softball Caps Off Historic Regular Season With Sweep Of Centenary

SHREVEPORT, LA - Trinity University Softball brooms Centenary College on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (29-11) finished off the regular season with a bang. The 29th win of the season is the first time that Trinity has reached that mark since 2006. This win took extra innings, but the Tigers came out on top 2-1. Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, California / Thousand Oaks) earned her 14th win of the season in relief, moving up the ranks to sixth all-time for wins in a season. Arce pitched three shutout innings and only gave up one hit. Jordan also got it done at the dish, going 2-2. Heather Nugent (Huntington Beach, California / Marina) capped off her stellar weekend with her third save, finishing off the final two outs of the eighth. Jordyn Williams (Clayton, California / Clayton Valley Charter) added another multi-hit game as she went 2-3 at the plate. Leah Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas / East Central) and Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy for Arts Careers and Technology) both collected RBIs. The Tigers now sit firmly in second place in the conference standings, earning a first-round bye.

How It Happened

The first inning came and went like a racing cheetah. The first hit of the game came from a Koelewyn single to center during the second. The Ladies had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the second, so it was time for the Trinity defense to work some magic. Koelewyn used her lightning reactions to field a comebacker and keep the runners at bay. The next play came from the rocket arm of Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom) and the Tigers escaped the jam.

It was another three up three down show in the third inning but the fourth got a little bit more interesting. Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian) started it off with a single through the five-six hole and was brought to third off of a single by Williams. Even though Centenary brought in a new arm, the Tigers are like Tim Duncan's hook shot when there are runners in scoring position; they are money. Koelewyn sent a sacrifice fly to center field and brought in the first run of the game. CC answered in the bottom of the inning and we were all knotted up at one.

Trinity found themselves in another jam in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Jordan Arce was called into the circle. Arce must've known she was in Louisiana because she threw those pitches bayou. Tigers escape again. Both teams left runners on third in the final inning of regulation and it was time for extras. In the eighth, Williams squeaked one up the middle for a lead off single. Arce and Marina Delaluna (Concord, California / Concord) found their way on via the bunt and the bases were like lemons on a hot summer day, juiced. Leah Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and the Tigers were three outs away from the sweep. Centenary loaded the bases in the bottom of the innings but Nugent forced two fly outs to end the game and complete the sweep. Tigers win 2-1.
