SAN ANTONIO – The 11th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team defeated Southwestern University 5-2 in Sunday's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Match, securing the team's 11th conference title of the last 12 years.
The Tigers and Pirates have met in eight consecutive conference finals, with the Tigers now winning each of the last three championships and improving to 15-4 on the season. Southwestern fell to 14-11 after the loss. Trinity's SCAC Championship is the third in four seasons under the direction of Head Coach
Drew Cohn. Coach Cohn has led the team to three SCAC titles and this year will be the third appearance in the NCAA Playoffs during his tenure.
The two teams split the first two doubles points, beginning with
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) and
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) opening with an 8-5 win at line two to put Trinity up 1-0. Southwestern earned a tiebreaker win at #1 doubles over Trinity's
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) to tie the match. Trinity earned the advantage after doubles as
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) and
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) took an 8-4 victory to put Trinity in front 2-1.
Cushing kept the momentum going for the Tigers in singles play, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at line six to make it 3-1. Andrade won 6-0, 6-2 at #5 singles to put Trinity on the brink, then Levy earned the clincher with a 6-0, 6-3 win at line three.

With the win, Trinity earns the SCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs and will return to the postseason tournament for the third straight season. The NCAA will announce the full field of participants on Monday, May 6.
