Jimmy Smith Leads Team USA To 3x3 Silver Medal

Trinity University Men's Basketball Head Coach Jimmy Smith wins silver medal with USA 3x3 in Mongolia.

Coach Smith was selected as the head coach of the 2024 USA 3x3 Men's U23 National Team. The team excelled in pool play, starting with a 20-10 victory over Chile. They followed up with another win against Lithuania, finishing 21-13. The success continued as Coach Smith's team defeated Kenya 21-10 and dominated Latvia with a score of 22-5.

With an impressive 4-0 record, the USA advanced to the quarterfinals to face China. Although the game was close at first, the USA surged ahead in the middle of the match, securing a 21-11 victory. In the semifinals, the team narrowly edged out Spain with a 21-19 win. However, they fell short in the finals, losing to Germany 21-13. Coach Smith and Team USA left Mongolia with a silver medal.

"Coaching a team in the U23 World Cup was an amazing experience," said Coach Smith. "It was so fun to watch the pride in which everyone takes competing for their country. FIBA 3x3 is still a relatively new game in America but is very established in most other countries. It is really high level basketball and extremely competitive. I was really proud of our guys for going 6-1 and ultimately getting the silver medal. We knocked off some really good teams along the way!"

"I am really appreciative of USAB for giving me the opportunity to work with this amazing group of players and staff. It definitely helped me grow as a coach and I picked up a lot of things throughout this experience that will also benefit our program here at Trinity."

Coach Smith and the Tigers will start their 2024-25 season against Bethany Lutheran College on November 8th.
