Tiger Men's Basketball Takes On Ozarks And Centenary In Home Contests

Tiger Men's Basketball steps up to face Centenary and Ozarks this weekend in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) action.

The Tigers (14-3, 7-1 SCAC) secured two hard-fought wins last weekend against McMurry and Concordia. Jacob Harvey (Huffman, Texas / Hargrave) led the way offensively, totaling 36 points across the two games. In the matchup against Concordia, Dean Balo (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) contributed 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Against McMurry, Christian Green (San Antonio, Texas / Veterans Memorial) recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

On the national stage, the Tigers rank 10th in steals per game, 13th in turnovers per game, and 10th in free throw attempts per game.

SCAC Player of the Week - Jacob Harvey

For the third time in his career, Jacob Harvey has been selected as the SCAC Player of the Week.

From the SCAC Press Release:

Harvey had an outstanding weekend as he led the Trinity to a 2-0 record, extending their win streak to eight games. Against McMurry, Harvey hit his second game-winner of the season in the final seconds to lift the Tigers over the Warhawks 81-80. In his game against Concordia, Harvey dropped 26 points on a red hot 9-16 shooting, including going 5-9 from beyond the arc. With his efforts, the Tigers retained their first place standing in the gold bracket and Jacob now ranks third nationally in three-point attempts and 10th nationally in three-pointers per game and total three-point field goals. On the week, Harvey averaged 18.0 points on 50 percent shooting, including 40 percent from beyond the arc and added 3.0 steals, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He is now sixth in the SCAC in points per game, averaging 16.4.

Preview - SCAC Back Home

The Tigers will be back in Calgaard Gymnasium this weekend. On Friday, January 31st, Trinity will match up against Ozarks at 7:30 PM. Then, the following day, Centenary will come into town with a tip-off set for 6:00 PM.

On the Ozarks Eagles: The Eagles boast an impressive 13-4 record (5-3 SCAC) this season. However, four of their wins have come against Hendrix and Millsaps, with Rhodes and Millsaps holding underwhelming records of 2-17 and 3-16, respectively. Despite this, Ozarks has secured some quality victories, including wins over Lyon College, Centenary, and Austin College. As a team, the Eagles struggle from beyond the arc, shooting just 26.7 percent from three-point range. Senior guard Justice Marmara, however, is a standout player who averages over 16 points per game and shoots above 40 percent from both the field and beyond the arc. This game will mark the first-ever matchup between these two teams.

On the Centenary Gents: Last season's SCAC Champions, Centenary, have struggled this year with a 6-11 overall record (4-4 SCAC). After a tough start to the season, going 2-7 in the first two months, the Gents showed improvement in January with a 4-1 record but have since dropped their last three games. Guards Quentin Beverly and Craig Collier have been bright spots, each averaging over 15 points per game this season. In their previous matchup, the Tigers dominated Centenary with a convincing 79-61 victory. Trinity now holds a 15-12 all-time record against the Gents.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers will hit the road to play old SCAC foes Texas Lutheran and Southwestern on February 7th and 8th.
