No. 23 Tiger Football Hosts Centre For Alumni Weekend

No. 23 Tiger Football welcomes back the Trinity Alumni for their game against Centre College.

The Tigers (5-1, 2-1 SAA) are coming off a blowout win against Millsaps College 63-0. The Tigers (5-1, 2-1) piled up a school-record 734 yards of total offense against the Lynx (1-5, 0-3) that included an astounding 421 yards rushing – the third-highest total in school history. It is just the third time in school history that Trinity has finished a game with more than 700 yards of total offense. Quarterback Hondo Franklin (Allen, Texas / Lovejoy) accounted for three touchdowns and more than 300 yards of offense in the game. Franklin connected on 17-of-25 passing for 260 yards and two scores, while also rushing 72 yards on five carries and another touchdown. Wide receiver Alejandro Tavarez (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) was the clear favorite on the day, catching eight passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns – including a career-long 78-yard score late in the third quarter.

Preview - Alumni Weekend

The Tigers will host Centre College on Alumni Weekend with a 12:30 PM kickoff.

On the Centre College Colonels: So far this season, the Colonels are 3-3 (2-1 SAA). After they opened their season with a 23-15 win against Hanover, Centre was beaten by nationally-ranked Depauw 35-14. For their other non-conference game, the Colonels took a 20-6 loss against LaGrange. In conference play, they have beaten both Millsaps and Southwestern, but suffered a loss to Maryville.

Offensively, the Colonels sport three running backs. Although only one of them has over 200 yards this season, all have over 20 attempts. Senior quarterback Jack Gohmann will call the shots, but he has struggled this season. Gohmann has not surpassed over 300 yards passing yet this season and has thrown at least one interception in all but one game. Gohmann also had a four interception game against LaGrange. Senior receiver Blake Busson is the lone bright spot for this Centre offense. Busson has 571 yards receiving and four touchdowns this season, including three games with over 100 yards.

Defensively, junior linebacker Nik Dixon leads the way with 29 tackles. Fellow linebacker Brennan Bareswilt leads the team with 7.5 tackles for loss while also having 2.5 sacks. The Centre secondary has four interceptions and 17 pass break ups so far this season. On special teams, punter Will Boehm has 31 punts for 1306 yards and also has a long punt of 63 yards, 14 punts pinned inside the 20, and eight punts of 50 or more yards.

Last season, the Colonels beat Trinity 24-12. Historically, however, the Tigers are 19-12 against Centre and are 4-1 in their last five match ups.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers will hit the road to Tennessee to take on Sewanee on November 1st.
