SAN ANTONIO – The No. 6 nationally-ranked Trinity University Men's Soccer Team continued its dominant run with a comfortable 3-1 win over Millsaps College on Sunday afternoon at
Paul McGinlay Field, extending its unbeaten conference start to 6-0-0 and improving to 13-0-1.
The Tigers came out firing on Sunday afternoon, immediately taking control and pinning Millsaps deep inside their own half. Trinity poured on the pressure from the opening whistle, racking up 11 first-half shots while allowing just one in return. Their dominance was rewarded in the 19th minute when
Julian Lopez (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal) was quicker to a loose ball in the penalty area and chopped down. Up stepped senior captain
Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs), who coolly slotted home the penalty to give the hosts an early lead.
It looked to be heading towards a statement victory when, less than ten minutes later, the Tigers doubled their advantage. Defender
Matt Lim (Davao City, Philippines / Montverde Academy (Fla.)) pounced on a ball into the box, tapping it towards
Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound), who took one touch and hit it on the bounce into the top right-hand corner from the center of the box, to make it 2-0 before the half-hour mark. Trinity's back line, led by
Luke Mayfield (Dallas, Texas / J.J. Pearce) and
Daniel Urquidi (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock), remained sharp, comfortably seeing out the first half without allowing a clear look on goal.
Millsaps briefly found a lifeline midway through the second half when they capitalized on a mistake and buried their opportunity to make it 2-1. But any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed. In the 80th minute, captain
Samuel Theiss (Boerne, Texas / Boerne) received the ball in midfield, drove towards the opposition box, and unleashed a long-range effort that flew over the standstill goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make the scoreline 3-1.
The Tigers finished with a commanding 19-6 shot advantage and a 3-1 victory, extending their unbeaten run to six games in Southern Athletic Association play. Once again, Trinity showcased the composure and attacking depth that have defined Head Coach
Paul McGinlay's side throughout the season.
