San Antonio, TEXAS – The Trinity track teams will open the indoor season this Friday, Dec. 5, at the Birmingham Ice Breaker in Birmingham, Alabama. The Tigers have opened their season in Birmingham since 2022, although they competed at Grand Valley State University last season due to the sudden closure of Birmingham-Southern College. Now hosted by an independent organization, the meet is back on and will welcome 10 Trinity athletes, five men and five women.
Bocar Diagana will compete in the men's triple jump, the event in which he qualified for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships. His PR of 14.80m from last spring would put him well clear of the 14.38m mark it took to make indoor nationals last season. The triple jump school record holder and All-American outdoors will look to put up a strong mark early in hopes of qualifying for indoor nationals.
Price Schultea and
Orie Piken will take on the men's 60-meter, with both athletes eyeing the school record of 7.03, held by
Legend Grigsby. Piken currently sits third on the all-time list with a PR of 7.11, and Schultea is eighth at 7.16.
Nia Scott and Lily Broussard will compete in the women's 60-meter. Scott is currently fourth in school history in the event with a PR of 8.10, and Broussard, a long sprint specialist, will compete in the event for the first time.
Schultea and Piken will double back in the men's 200-meter, joined by
Kris Duggan and
Ryan Forson. Schultea, the school record holder in the event outdoors a 21.26, sits third all-time indoors with a PR of 22.39, while Piken is seventh in 22.59. Forson holds an indoor PR of 22.92, and Duggan, a long hurdles specialist and decathlete, has never competed in the event indoors. He will double back in the 60-meter high hurdles.
Scott will also compete in the women's 200-meter along with Isabella Gaylord, making her collegiate debut. Scott is eighth in school history with a PR of 26.82. Gaylord is the lone freshman joining the Tigers in their season opener. She will also double back in the 60-meter high hurdles.
Halle Hamilton will compete in the women's 800-meter as the lone middle-distance runner making the trip. She currently holds the school record indoors for the event with a PR of 2:21.17, and ranks second outdoors with a PR of 2:16.60.
Addison Doss will compete in the women's pole vault, where she currently sits second all-time with a mark of 3.40m indoors. Her PR of 3.60m outdoors, which also puts her second all-time, would put her over the indoor school record of 3.58m, held by Mia Loseff.
The Tigers have also put together a women's 4x400-meter squad of Hamilton, Gaylord, Scott and Broussard. Hamilton and Broussard are members of the indoor school record 4x400-meter squad with a time of 3:57.22.
One notable absence from the travel squad is outdoor women's long jump All-American
Annabelle Lanik, who is currently vying for a national title with the Trinity volleyball team.
Looking Ahead
After brushing off the dust, the Tigers will be back in competition with a much larger contingent of athletes at McNeese State on Jan. 16.
