SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity women's basketball team (1-5) earned their first win today in convincing fashion, walloping Concordia University (1-5) 111-57. With four players in double digits, the Tigers put on an offensive highlight reel for the home crowd tonight.
The Tigers' weakness all season has been their shooting and rebounding numbers. Against the Tornadoes, those became their strength. The home side shot 51% from the field, by far their highest mark of the season, and 36% from three-point range. Shots were not falling for Concordia, shooting just 33% from the field and 22% from deep. The ball was also flying around the court to open Tigers in a way their opponents couldn't match. Trinity had 27 assists, to Concordia's 7.
The rebounding edge was flipped on its head as well for the Tigers. After a -25 rebounding margin against McMurry University last time out, they outrebounded the Tornadoes by 16, grabbing 49 to Concordia's 33. On the defensive end, Trinity left the visiting team with no breathing room, forcing 31 turnovers while giving up just 12.
It was a scoring party across the box score for the Tigers tonight.
Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) had 21 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals on 60% (9-15) shooting in just 19 minutes.
Lily Sauvageau (Houston, Texas / Second Baptist) had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals on 67% (6-9) shooting, also playing just 17 minutes.
Allison Even (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) had a career-high 11 points off the bench on 57% (4-7) shooting, along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
Skye O'Rourke (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) was perfect from the field, recording 10 points on 5 shots, along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.
Ivory Scott (Waco, Texas / Waco) nearly had a double-double, posting 9 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 75% (3-4) from deep.
The Rundown
To make a long story short, the Tigers started the game with dominance and never looked back. With three quick three-pointers after tip-off, they led 11-0 after just 2:11 of play. After 2 Concordia buckets to bring the lead back within single digits, things never got close again. The first quarter ended with Trinity leading 25-10.
The game got ugly in the second quarter. Once again, Trinity opened the period up with no regard for their opponents, scoring 8 unanswered points in the first 1:50. Concordia responded with some shots of their own, but the Tigers' dominance showed its face once again in the final 3:44 of the period, when they closed the half out on an 18-0 run. Heading into the break, the lead had grown insurmountable, with Trinity leading 60-22.
Things were more back and forth in the third, but Trinity continued to find themselves on scoring streaks that had the Tornadoes helpless. For almost the entire first half of the period, from 9:04 to 5:42, the Tigers were unanswerable, scoring 16 straight points to bring the lead over 50 points for the first time. The quarter ended with the Tigers leading 87-38.
The final quarter was the closest of the game, but huge Trinity runs kept on coming. Thanks to a 12-0 run midway through the period, the Tigers increased their lead to nearly 60 points. Scoring over 100 points for the first time this season, Trinity got their long-awaited first win by a 54-point margin, 111-57.
Coach Speak
"
Love Actually is such a great movie," mused Head Coach
Cameron Hill. One of my favorite parts of the message are the opening and ending credits. If you know you know, but tonight I went to Heathrow to pick up an old friend I haven't seen in a while named The Together Tigers! I'm crying. ONWARD!"
Looking Ahead
The Tigers will stay at home to take on Texas Lutheran University (2-3) on Dec. 5. The last time the two teams matched up was in last season's SCAC Championship final, when Trinity fell 63-73 to end their postseason run.
