San Antonio - In the team's 2025 home debut, Trinity University Softball fell in both ends of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against No. 14 Texas Lutheran University on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (5-4, 3-2 SCAC) lost a thriller eight-inning opening game by a score of 6-4 and were shutout 5-0 in game two.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy for Arts Careers and Technology) put in a good effort trying to hold down the fort, striking out three batters in eight innings pitched while only allowing three earned runs.
Cameron Bishop (Austin, Texas / Austin) put in a strong performance in relief, not allowing a run in her one inning of work.
Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) was one of the purveyors of offense for the Tigers, going 3-for-8 with one RBI in the doubleheader.
Game 1: Trinity 4, TLU 6 (8 Inn.)
Koelewyn sat down the first six Bulldogs in order before surrendering a single in the top of the third, which is when trouble started to brew. The Bulldogs strung together a couple of hits to break up the shutout and put the Tigers behind 4-0.
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) got into scoring position to start the bottom of the third with a leadoff double. Boudreaux completed the alley-oop with an RBI single to drive Tagawa in and get the Tigers on the board at 4-1.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) knew she needed to be a rally starter, and did just that with two outs in the inning, striking a ball up the middle to restart the offense. Koelewyn followed up with a single of her own, and
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif / Thousand Oaks) drew a walk to juice the bases. It was at that point
Sydney Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) stepped into the batter's box as a pinch hitter and hit what looked to be a simple two-RBI single up the middle; however, the throw home got away from the Bulldog catcher and another close play at home revealed that the Tigers had tied the game 4-4.
Both pitchers settled in after that and neither side had many scoring opportunities for the next four innings. The Bulldogs broke through in the top of the eighth, putting two runs across the plate to reclaim the lead at 6-4, applying pressure on Trinity heading into the bottom of the eighth. Arce attempted to start another two-out rally with a single into left field, but that was all the Tigers were able to muster as Texas Lutheran escaped with the win.
Game 2: Trinity 0, TLU 5
Game two saw Texas Lutheran threaten to score in the top of the first with runners on second and third with only one out, but
Megan Kriechbaum (Cedar Hills, Utah / Pleasant Grove) retired the next two batters to keep those runners stranded. After that, neither side saw many runners in scoring position for the next two innings with both Kriechbaum and Texas Lutheran's pitcher on their A-games. It would be the Bulldogs who opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, using some smart base running to score the first two runs of the game.
Texas Lutheran cemented their lead with a three-spot in the top of the sixth to grab a 5-0 lead over the Tigers. Trinity loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but left disappointed as Bulldog pitching proved too much to overcome, and the Tigers were blanked to close out the day.
