Burns Highlights Tiger Men and Women at Day Two of NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Trinity University men's and women's swimming & diving teams picked up another All-American award and finished in the top 30 or better in each event they competed in on the second day of the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Tiger women are currently in 20th place in the meet, having scored 13 total points over the first two days. Trinity has had three student-athletes earn All-America honors in the first two days of action, including two in last night's competition.

Tonight, Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) secured All-American status for the ninth time in her career and for the third straight year in the 400 individual medley. Burns finished eighth in tonight's Championship Final with a time of 4:24.11. She was fifth in this morning's prelims with a time of 4:21.57 to qualify for the finals.

Luke Fender (Jackson, Miss. / St. Andrew's Episcopal) and Amy Benson (Newmarket, N.H. / Phillips Exeter Academy) both competed in this morning's 200 free prelims and both Tigers were just over a second from breaking Trinity records that were set by them earlier this year. Fender finished 23rd in the men's race with a time of 1:39.00 and Benson was 28th in the women's competition with a time of 1:51.98.

The relay team of Allison Ortiz (Houston, Texas / Stratford), Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus), Julia Carter (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs), and Benson finished 19th in the 200 free relay this morning, missing a spot in tonight's finals by just 0.63 seconds. The Trinity quartet finished in 1:34.74, which is the best time this season and improves upon the group's previous best from 2024, which is ranked third in school history.

Up Next
Trinity will compete in the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay in tomorrow's action – the third of four days of competition at nationals. Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted), Burns, Ortiz, and Benson will swim the medley relay, which is the first event scheduled for tomorrow's prelims at 10:00 a.m. The free relay team consists of Burns, Jacobson, Carter, and Benson and will be the final swimming event in the morning session.
