GEORGETOWN, Texas - Trinity University Softball recorded a lopsided victory over Southwestern University in the opening game of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series.
The Tigers (23-6, 16-3 SCAC) were red hot on offense, recording 19 hits as a team to run rule the Pirates by a score of 13-5 in six innings.
Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) was one of four Tigers to collect three hits against Southwestern pitching, using those three hits to add three RBI to her season total.
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, California / Thousand Oaks) was the winning pitcher, limiting the Pirates to just four hits in her 3.1 innings pitched.
Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) can officially call herself a record breaker, not for her impressive day at the plate where she hit 3-4 with two RBI, but for coming in to score five times – a feat no Tiger in program history has accomplished in a single game.
The Rundown
Trinity started the scoring early, firing the opening salvo when
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) doubled down the left field line to score
Ella Whitacre for the first run of the game in the top of the first. Southwestern would tie things up the next inning however when the Tigers allowed the Pirates to walk in a run to make it a 1-1 game.
Jordan Arce then entered the circle and got the Tigers out of the bases loaded jam with a strikeout.
The Tigers retook the lead in the top of the third after
Hannah Boudreaux hit a single right past the Pirate pitcher to plate Whitacre once again. Boudreaux would also cross home plate thanks to
Jordan Arce hitting a single past the third baseman to give Trinity the 3-1 lead. The Pirates fired back with a two run home run in the bottom of the third to tie things at 3-3.
The Ambush weren't going to settle for anything but the lead, regaining it when
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) hit a ground ball into center field to bring across
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) in the top of the fourth. Whitacre touched home plate for a third time thanks to another hit from
Hannah Boudreaux that gave the Tigers a 5-3 advantage.Â
The Pirates blundered into disaster in the top of the fifth when they issued a bases-loaded walk to
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom). The Tigers then elected for
Kayci Menchaca (Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias) to enter as a pinch hitter, and she drove in
Peyton Bowser (Arvada Colorado / West) with an RBI groundout. Whitacre stepped into the box and dropped a bunt on the first pitch she saw to score Del Toro and get on first base herself. Trinity kept up their blistering pace when
Hannah Boudreaux hit another RBI single that was too hot for the Southwestern infield to handle. After Trinity loaded the bases,
Mariana Garcia (Goodyear, Arizona / Canyon View) stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single that drove in Whitacre for a fourth time and put the Tigers up 10-3, silencing the Southwestern crowd.
Trinity put the game into run rule territory in the top of the sixth when a slow ground ball by Whitacre forced the Pirates to surrender another run.
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, California / El Camino Real) helped Whitacre break the single game runs record with a 2 RBI single up the middle that let Whitacre earn record breaker status and make it a 13-3 game. Southwestern would scratch across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little too late and Trinity would take game one of the series by a run rule final score of 13-5 in six innings.
