SAN ANTONIO – The eighth ranked Trinity University baseball team defeated McMurry University (TX) 5-1 to clinch another Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series.
The Tigers saw their impressive record improve to 11-1 (10-1 SCAC) and furthered their hold on first place in the SCAC standings. McMurry took their second loss in a row to fall to 11-4 (7-4 SCAC) and were held to their season low in terms of runs scored.
Trajan Lee (Dallas, Texas / John Paul II) continues to dazzle on the mound for Trinity, collecting the win thanks to a strong 6.1-inning performance to improve his record to 4-0.
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) farmed some hits off of McMurry's pitching, batting 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to contribute to the Tiger's offensive output.
The Rundown
Lee started the game off on the right foot, completing a "three up, three down" inning in the top of the first. McMurry would start the scoring off with an RBI single in the top of the second to make it a 1-0 game, but that would prove to be the only run the War Hawks would get the entire game.
The bottom of the fifth is where the fun began for the Tiger offense, which was held to just one hit over the first four frames.
John Ramsey (Austin, Texas / Westwood) drew a walk, stole second base, and advanced on a ground ball to put himself into scoring position for McDonald, who proceeded to hit an RBI ground-rule double to tie things up at 1-1. The two-out rally continued with RBI singles from both
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) and
Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) to put the Tigers up 3-1 by the time the fifth ended.
Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake) kicked the bottom of the sixth off with a double into left-center to knock out the McMurry starting pitcher. A new face on the mound didn't deter the Tiger offense, and Ramsey knocked in Lustina with an RBI double. An RBI single by McDonald put the score at 5-1 advantage Trinity heading into the final three innings.
In the top of the seventh
Max Milligan (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) made an incredible catch in left field that turned into a double play, due to a McMurry runner being caught off base trying to advance on the presumed hit, which prevented momentum from shifting into McMurry's favor.
Brandon Morio (Austin, Texas / McNeil) came out of the bullpen and made quick work of the War Hawk bats to clinch the series for the Tigers with a 5-1 victory.
