SAN ANTONIO – The 10th-ranked Tiger Baseball team returned home to open a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Centenary College (LA) with a huge 13-2 run-rule victory on Friday night.
Trinity (24-7, 19-3 SCAC) scored the first 13 runs against the Gents (14-17, 10-12 SCAC), beginning with a huge seven-run second inning to set the tone for the game. The Tigers added two more runs in the third and then poured in four more scores in the sixth before Centenary broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh.
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) led the way with two hits and four RBI in the game, while
Khalfani Coney (Los Angeles, Calif. / Crossroads School) and
Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif. / Grace Brethren) had two hits each.
Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) had a hit and drew two walks, scoring twice and picking up two RBI.
John Ramsey (Austin, Texas / Westwood) tied a school record by drawing four walks, leading to three runs scored for the Tiger freshman.
Mattias Rytting (Houston, Texas / Bellaire) drew two walks, scored twice, and collected two RBI.
Jace Clay (Missouri City, Texas / Strake Jesuit) picked up the win and improved to 4-1 this season, pitching five shutout innings during which he allowed just two hits and struck out five batters.
The Rundown
It was an electric start to the weekend series starting in the second inning with Coney, Rytting, and
Nick Jones (Southlake, Texas Carroll) each picking up an RBI, while
Nick Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) and Baker picked up two each in the inning. Trinity put up seven total runs against Centenary bring the score to 7-0 at the end of the second inning.
The energy only continued into the third inning when Clay struck out two of Centenary's batters. In the bottom of the third inning, McDonald continued the run streak by singling up the middle on an RBI to push home and bring the score up to 8-0. Right behind him was
Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) running home on a wild pitch.
The fourth and fifth innings were quiet for the Tigers as no runs were scored by either team. However, this did not stop Trinity from coming back out in the bottom of the sixth to further extend their lead. Rytting came out strong with bases loaded hitting an RBI pushing Baker home to make it 10-0 and put the run rule into play. Then in a highlight reel moment McDonald doubled off the wall to center field clearing the bases and bringing in Ramsey, Rytting, and Tinker home making it 13-0.
In the seventh inning Centenary made a weak last-minute attempt to save themselves from being run-ruled by putting two runs on the board; however, it was too little too late and the Tigers ended the night with a dominating 13-2 win.
