Trinity Men's Basketball Head Coach Jimmy Smith Resigns

SAN ANTONIO — Trinity University announces the resignation of Head Men's Basketball Coach Jimmy Smith, who has accepted a position as Associate Head Coach at Stephen F. Austin State University (TX), marking the next chapter in his distinguished coaching career.

Coach Smith joined Trinity University in 2020 and was instrumental in elevating the Tigers' basketball program to new heights. The team achieved an impressive 98-24 record during his tenure, including a stellar 45-9 record over the past two seasons. The Tigers secured the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Regular Season Championship in both 2023-24 and 2024-25 and made two NCAA playoff appearances during his tenure. Coach Smith's dedication and strategic acumen earned him SCAC Coach of the Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District Coach of the Year honors in 2024.

Before his time at Trinity, Coach Smith held head coaching positions at Schreiner University (TX), Millsaps College (MS), and Texas Lutheran University, amassing a career record of 201-109 over 12 seasons. His ability to transform programs and foster excellence has been a hallmark of his career.

Trinity University extends its heartfelt gratitude to Coach Smith for his contributions to the Tigers' basketball program and the broader university community. His leadership, passion, and commitment have left an indelible mark on Trinity Athletics.

"While we are sad to see him go, we wish him all the best in his new role at Stephen F. Austin."

Coach Smith expressed his gratitude to Trinity University and the San Antonio community, stating, "There are so many things to say, but more than anything, I want to say thank you. Thank you, Trinity University for the opportunity to lead this program for the last five seasons. Thank you to the leadership and support staff for all the things that you do to give our student-athletes the best chance to be successful. Thank you to the alumni and fans for showing up and supporting our team. Lastly, thank you to our student-athletes and families for their commitment and belief in our program. This program is filled with high-character, hard-working young men and I look forward to following their continued success in their time at Trinity and beyond. Go Tigers!"
