SAN ANTONIO – The women's Trinity basketball team (10-7, 6-0 SAA) continued their undefeated run tonight, defeating Sewanee (8-9, 1-5 SAA) 94-65. Stifling Tiger defense in the first quarter created a big gap on the scoreboard that Sewanee couldn't overcome, even as their shooting numbers improved.
The Tigers had Sewanee on the ropes from the early minutes of the game, and it showed on the stat sheet. Trinity shot 45% from the field and 44% from three, while Sewanee shot 36% from the field and 23% from three. The Tigers were hounds on defense, coming up with 17 steals and forcing 23 total turnovers, while giving up only 13. The only statistical category that Sewanee found themselves competitive in was the rebounding column, where they came up with 45 to Trinity's 43.
Trinity had all five starters in double-digits tonight, led by
Natalie Greenwood's (Dallas, Texas / Byron Nelson) double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds (6 of them offensive), along with 2 blocks, on 63% (5-8) shooting.

The Rundown
Tonight's game was over as soon as it started. The Tigers scored the first 9 points of the game, finding themselves up 9-0 with 6:36 left in the first quarter. Overwhelmed by the early press, Sewanee gave up 3 turnovers in just the first three minutes. A Sauvageau three created the first double-digit lead of the game with 5:10 to go, up 12-2. That bucket was the beginning of a 13-2 run over the next three minutes, as the Tigers went up 22-4 with 2:13 to go. It was more of the same as the period wound down, as Trinity took a 27-7 lead heading into the second.
The second quarter started with the same momentum that characterized the first, as Minter was fouled on a three-point attempt and drained all three free throws to go up 30-7 with 9:35 to go. Sewanee, who shot just 15% in the first quarter, began to find their stride a bit in the second period, but the Tigers stayed hot and only increased their lead. A Minter three put them up 41-14 with 4:59 to play. Less than three minutes later, an
Allison Even (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) three on the fast break put the Tigers up 30, 49-19, with 2:29 to go. Continuing to roll, Trinity took a 50-26 lead heading into the break.
Out of halftime, it was more of the same. The Tigers scored the first four points of the quarter and had already extended their lead to go up 54-26 with 9:25 to play. Despite Sewanee's best efforts, the lead would never dip below 20. Trinity had its best shooting quarter of the game in the third, making 53% of their shots in the period. O'Rourke's 8 points in the quarter kept the Tigers pushing steadily ahead, and they took a 74-45 lead into the final period.
Dana Gringey (Plano, Texas / Hebron) scored nine points in the fourth quarter, as the game stayed firmly out of reach for Sewanee. Trinity forced 5 turnovers in the period, and Sewanee shot just 29% from three. The final buzzer sounded to mark the end of a game that had been over for a while, as the Tigers took a 94-65 win to stay atop the SAA standings.
Coach Speak
"
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," began Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "Perhaps not Mel's most iconic picture, but nobody can deny Tina Turner's performance was '
Simply The Best!' Mad Max is tested time and time again, but the film eventually hinges upon his ability to survive a duel inside The Thunderdome. The crowd roars, 'two men enter, one man leaves…'. Well, tonight two Tigers entered, and one Tiger left. I don't think they like us very much, but hey, '
What's Love Got to do With it!' ONWARD."
Looking Ahead
The Tigers will be back on the court tomorrow night against Centre (15-2, 5-1 SAA). The Colonels will be traveling down from Georgetown, where they took a 71-62 win tonight against Southwestern University.
