Second-Half Explosion Lifts Tiger Men's Hoops Past Sewanee

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity men's basketball team (13-4, 5-1 SAA) kept rolling tonight with a blowout 103-84 win against Sewanee (8-9, 4-2 SAA). The Tigers shot lights out from the field and were commanding on defense to cement their big win back home in San Antonio.

The Tigers shot 58% from the field and 35% from three, while Sewanee shot 49% from the field and 41% from three. Trinity came up with 14 steals and forced 22 total turnovers, while giving up just 11 turnovers. Those turnovers made a huge difference, as the Tigers scored 32 points off turnovers tonight. They also doubled Sewanee's points in the paint, scoring 68 to their 34. The closest statistical category was rebounds, where Sewanee took the advantage with 36 to Trinity's 33.

Jackson Lawson (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had a career night with a career-high 35 points and 4 rebounds on 78% (14-18) shooting from the field and 57% (4-7) shooting from three. His 35 points are the most for a Trinity player since the 2005-06 season when Andy Bates scored 39 against Southwestern University. Will Bronson (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit) had his usual double-double, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high tying 6 blocks on 58% (7-12) shooting. Ben Estis (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had 10 points and 3 rebounds on 44% (4-9) shooting. Zach Fenn (Covington, La. / Saint Paul's) had his sixth straight game of 3 or more steals, this time racking up 6 steals on the night. He's now only 3 steals away from the Trinity single-season record.

The Rundown
The Tigers couldn't take the lid off the basket early, and Sewanee took a 20-8 lead with 13:56 still to play. Trinity responded in a big way, with an 11-1 run over the next three minutes to bring the game back within their reach, 19-21 with 10:49 to play. In a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the half, Sewanee was able to hold their lead for much of the quarter. With 4:21 to go, and Sewanee up 38-29, Trinity went on a 10-0 run with zero misses over three minutes, to take their first lead of the game, 39-38 with 1:29 to play. Sewanee held on to retake the lead, but the game was well within reach at the break, 45-43.

The Tigers turned it on in the second, shooting 66% in the period. Back and forth for the first few minutes, they turned it on with 18 minutes remaining, when Trinity turned a 48-50 deficit into a 61-53 advantage with 15:14 to go. Their 13-3 run was characterized by stifling defense and Lawson's scoring dominance, as he accounted for 9 of those points. Trinity took its first double-digit lead just a minute later, when a Dean Balo (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) layup put the Tigers up 65-55 with 14:16 to play. They kept pouring it on, building up an 88-63 lead with 8:17 to go off a quick 6-0 run. Bronson and Lawson continued to roll, and things only got worse for Sewanee. A fast break Bronson layup put the Tigers up 92-73 with 4:20 remaining, a lead that would hold until the final buzzer, which marked a 103-84 Tiger victory.

Looking Ahead
The Tigers will be back on the court tomorrow night against Centre College (8-8, 1-5 SAA), who fell tonight at Southwestern University, 71-72, as the Pirates hit a last-second three to take the win.
