Trinity Men's Hoops Starts Second Round Of SAA Play With Sewanee and Centre

San Antonio, TEXAS – The Trinity men's basketball team (14-4, 6-1 SAA) will head for a rematch this weekend with the University of the South of Sewanee (8-10, 4-3 SAA) and Centre College (8-9,1-6 SAA). The Tigers defeated both teams at home last weekend, but will now have to face them on the road. They've found a lot of success playing in San Antonio, with an 8-1 record at home, but have struggled some on the road, posting a 3-3 away record.

Last Time Out

Last time out, a 96-90 win at home against Centre, the Tigers were aggressive on both sides of the ball, getting to the line at will with 40 free throw attempts, and playing stifling defense to limit the Colonels to 38% shooting from the field. Will Bronson and Dean Balo were the night's highlights, tallying 23 and 20 points, respectively. Bronson added 13 rebounds and 2 blocks to his stat sheet, while Balo had 5 rebounds in the outing.

SAA Athlete of the Week - Will Bronson

Bronson was named last week's SAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for his dominant weekend, earning the award for the second time this year.

From the SAA Press Release:

Bronson had a pair of double-doubles to lead the Trinity men's basketball team to two wins at home over the weekend, defeating both Sewanee and Centre to remain in first place in the SAA standings. Bronson opened with a near triple-double against Sewanee, scoring 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. He hit 7-of-12 from the field and also dished out a pair of assists in just 25 minutes of the 103-84 win.

On Saturday night against Centre, Bronson went off for 23 points and 13 boards, hitting 7-of-8 from the field and 9-of-11 at the free throw line. He added two more blocks and another assist to his weekend, as the Tigers won 96-90 over the Colonels. The 23 points are just one away from Bronson's career high and just his second 20-point game of the year. He now has 10 double-doubles this season, including six in the last seven games alone.

Preview - Back for More

On the Sewanee Tigers: Sewanee entered the weekend hot, tied for first in the SAA with a 4-1 record, but dropped to third after losses to Trinity and Southwestern. In the first game of the weekend, an 84-103 loss to Trinity, Sewanee's biggest struggle was holding onto the ball, with 22 total turnovers. Averaging 15.8 a game, turnovers have been an issue for the Tigers all year long, and will be a key to their rematch with Trinity. Sewanee will also have to limit Trinity's ability to score down low, as last time out, they allowed 68 points in the pain, while only scoring 34 of their own.

Another key for Sewanee will be getting help for freshman guard Nikolas Avaliani, who scored 32 points on 61% (11-18) shooting from the field and 50% (5-10) shooting from three against Trinity. Junior guard Aidan Treacy was also in double-digits, with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists, but turned the ball over 7 times. Junior guard JD Gardner had 12 points and 2 rebounds. Junior forward Fletcher Bigham, who entered the game averaging over 20 points per game, was all but silent, scoring just 9 points on 30% (3-10) shooting.

On the Centre Colonels: The Colonels suffered a pair of single-digit losses this past weekend, elongating their now five-game losing streak. It was foul trouble and the gap in shooting percentage that kept Centre at bay against the Tigers, as they committed 30 personal fouls and shot just 38% from the field, to Trinity's 52%. Shot making has been the low point for the Colonels so far this year, as they have made just under 40% of their shots on the season.

Drake Ingram was the big story for Centre against the Tigers, scoring 27 points off the bench on an efficient 45% (5-11) shooting from deep. Kalib Thomas added 20 points of his own, as well as 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Thomas was also on from three, shooting 44% (4-9) from beyond the arc, but the two players combined for just 40% shooting overall, highlighting the Colonels' struggles from the field. Nolan Wahl was the final player in double-digits, tallying a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Looking Ahead

After a short road trip, the Tigers will head back home to face Rhodes College (14-3, 5-1 SAA) and Millsaps College (11-6, 2-4 SAA) on Feb. 6 and 8, respectively. The Lynx of Rhodes handed Trinity their only conference loss on Jan. 16, when the Tigers fell 73-79 after coming short of making up a double-digit first half deficit. In Trinity's 73-69 win against Millsaps on Jan. 18, it was the opposite story, as the Tigers had to fend off a storming Majors team after building up a double-digit lead late in the first half.
