SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Trinity men's basketball team (15-4, 7-1 SAA) grabbed their fourth straight win today, defeating Sewanee (8-11, 4-4 SAA), 98-85. The Tigers won tonight's game on the offensive side of the ball, shooting lights out from the field and putting three players over 20 points.
Trinity shot an efficient 59% from the field and was can't-miss from three, shooting 69% from deep. Sewanee, on the other hand, struggled shooting the ball, 43% overall and just 19% from beyond the arc. Sewanee stayed in the game on the offensive glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds and ultimately taking 16 more shots than the Tigers. Trinity won the overall rebounding battle, however, grabbing 40 boards to Sewanee's 35. The turnover battle was close as well, as the Tigers gave the ball up 11 times to Sewanee's 10.
Will Bronson (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit) had another monster game tonight, securing his third straight double-double with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 2 blocks on 75% (9-12) shooting.
Dean Balo (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) had his second straight 20-point performance, adding 6 rebounds and 6 assists to his tally, shooting 46% (6-13) on the night.
Jackson Lawson (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) recorded 20 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal on 70% (7-10) shooting.
Carter Ruck (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had a career-high 13 points off the bench, while grabbing 3 rebounds and shooting 83% (5-6) from the field.
Ben Estis (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had 11 points on 75% (3-4) shooting.
The Rundown
Bronson opened up the game with a strong flush and a layup to give the Tigers the first 4 points of the game. With 15:43, he had already scored 8 points, and Trinity took an early 11-6 lead. They took their first double-digit lead of the game with 12:41 to go, when an Estis three gave them a 20-10 lead. The final minutes of the half were a back-and-forth affair, but Sewanee's 19% three-point shooting hampered their ability to get back in the game, and the lead never dipped below 5 points. Heading into the second half, the Tigers held a 47-42 lead.
The second half was when the Tigers' shooting numbers went through the roof, making 69% of their field goals and 86% of their threes. Once again, they opened the period with the first 4 points, grabbing a 51-42 lead with 19:06 to play. Sewanee fought their way back to make things competitive, closing things down to a 66-62 game with 12:02 to go. The Tigers responded with back-to-back threes from
Joshua Chesney and Ruck to put the lead over double-digits once again, 72-62 with 9:59 to go. Sewanee stayed in it, but a 12-2 run from Trinity, culminating in a Ruck jumper with 5:58 to go, gave the Tigers an 84-68 lead that would hold through the final buzzer. The shots kept on falling for Trinity, and they took their largest lead of the game with 2:50 to go, up 91-73. They held on to win the season's second battle of the Tigers, 98-85.
