The Rundown
A dead-locked first quarter, tied at 6 with 7:24 to go, was broken open when the Tigers scored 20 unanswered points, forcing 8 turnovers over the next five minutes. With 1:39 to play, Trinity had established a 26-6 lead that was not to be relinquished. Sewanee scored the last 6 points of the period, but the quarter still ended with the Tigers on top, 26-12.
The second quarter was a much different story, as neither team was able to pull away. A back-and-forth affair, the only separation came from back-to-back threes from
Dana Gringey (Plano, Texas / Hebron) and O'Rourke, as the Tigers created a 37-18 lead with 6:13 to go. The quarter ended about where it started, with Trinity leading 43-28.
Sewanee had their best quarter of the game in the third, but both teams struggled offensively, shooting about 30%. The lead dipped below double-digits for the first time since the first quarter, as Sewanee brought the deficit down to nine, 54-45, with 2:10 to go. The Tigers, however, were able to keep the lead from getting any smaller, taking a 57-47 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Tigers stretched their lead out once again, making a third of their shots in the period. A Minter layup with 3:47 to go put the score at 70–54, before two straight Sauvageau threes with 1:48 left to go were the dagger in any potential comeback. With a big fourth quarter, the Tigers escaped with an 80-64 win.
