Trinity Men's Soccer Heads To Tennessee For SAA Matchups

Trinity Men's Soccer (6-2-5) looks to extend its unbeaten streak to 12 games this weekend, hitting the road to face Sewanee on Friday, October 23rd, in Sewanee, Tennessee, before making the short trip to Maryville, Tennessee, to take on Maryville College on Sunday, October 25th.

Last week, the Trinity Tigers stretched their unbeaten run to ten matches, taking four points from a home Southern Athletic Association weekend at Paul McGinlay Field. On Friday, Trinity battled Berry College to a 1-1 draw in the first meeting since the Vikings knocked the Tigers out of last year's SAA Tournament on penalties, then followed it up on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Oglethorpe University to improve to 6-2-5 on the season and stay unbeaten in conference play.

Against Berry, Trinity dominated possession from the opening whistle but went into halftime scoreless despite a 6-3 shot advantage. The breakthrough came in the 56th minute, when Eduardo Parra (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma / Casady School) flicked a header into the path of Leo Jauregui (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson), who beat his defender down the right and cut the ball back for Parra to slot home his sixth goal of the season. Berry leveled against the run of play in the 77th minute with a header off a corner. The Tigers pushed for a winner down the stretch, with Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) forcing a late save and captain Daniel Urquidi (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) smashing a shot off the crossbar in the final minute. Trinity outshot Berry 16-6, and the draw kept the Tigers unbeaten in regulation against the Vikings across four all-time meetings.

Two days later against Oglethorpe, Trinity struck early and never let the Stormy Petrels settle. In the 9th minute, Julian Lopez (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal) slipped Jauregui in behind, and Jauregui whipped in a cross that Parra glanced into the bottom corner for his team-leading seventh goal, giving Jauregui an assist on the opener for the second straight match. The Tigers held Oglethorpe without a shot on target in the first half and kept pressing for an insurance goal after the break. Jayden Schell (Dallas, Texas / Plano) made his only save in the 90th minute to preserve Trinity's third shutout in four matches. The Tigers finished with a 16-5 shot advantage and an 11-3 edge in corners, extending their winning streak over Oglethorpe to 20 straight games, dating back to 1992.

Preview

The Trinity Tigers will kick off their second weekend of away SAA play on Friday, October 23rd, at 3:30 p.m. as they match up against the Sewanee University Tigers before facing off against the Maryville College Scots on Sunday, October 25th, at 1:30 p.m. (ET).

On the Sewanee University Tigers: Trinity and Sewanee are no strangers to each other, having met 23 times since 1991. Trinity won that first meeting 4-0 and has never looked back, going unbeaten in the series ever since. Last season's matchup was no exception, as Trinity came away with a 2-1 road win.

The 2025 meeting between Trinity and Sewanee went down to the wire, as the No. 7 nationally ranked Tigers rallied from a goal down for a 2-1 win at Puett Field to keep their conference record perfect. Sewanee struck first against the run of play in the 33rd minute, converting from the spot after its forward was brought down in the area, and Trinity went into the break trailing despite eight first-half shots. The Tigers leveled in the 64th minute, when the graduated Zach Anderson (Davis, California / Davis) slipped an overlapping Mayfield into the box, and Mayfield's first-time cut-back found then-freshman Thomas Kay (Stansted Mountfitchet, England / The Bishop's Stortford), who curled home from the penalty spot. After an effort rattled the crossbar, the winner finally came off Trinity's sixth corner in the 83rd minute. Romeo Corino (Monaco, Monaco / Woodstock Academy (Conn.)) curled a ball to the back post, Urquidi nodded it back across goal, and after a deflection off the graduated Luke Chandler (Glasgow, Scotland / Balfron), then-freshman Max Salinas (Austin, Texas / Austin) volleyed home his third goal of the season. Trinity outshot Sewanee 21-13 and improved to 11-1-0, extending its unbeaten run to eight matches and its all-time record against Sewanee to 23-0.

Sewanee posted an impressive 12-4-4 record last season, including a 3-2-2 mark in SAA play, before falling 2-0 to Centre College in the SAA Tournament quarterfinals. The Tigers return several key contributors from that team, highlighted by two First-Team All-SAA and United Soccer Coaches Third-Team All-Region selections, along with one Second-Team All-SAA pick and four honorable mention honorees.

Sewanee has been excellent so far this fall, going 11-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in SAA play. After falling 3-2 to then-No. 4 Emory on opening night, the Tigers have lost just once since. They enter Friday's matchup on a four-game winning streak, including a pair of 1-0 conference wins over Maryville and Centre last week, the same Centre side Trinity beat 4-0 two weekends ago. At 4-2-1 at home this season and eager to get the better of Trinity after last year's tight contest, Sewanee should make for a tough test on Friday night.

Players to watch: Junior forward Grayson White, a 2025 United Soccer Coaches Third-Team All-Region honoree, leads the Tigers' attack with seven goals and 10 assists in 14 games. Sophomore forward Thomas McGowan has added nine goals and two assists in 13 appearances. At the back, sophomore defender Edward Kennedy has started all 13 games he's played, logging a team-high in minutes while chipping in two goals. Sophomore midfielder Brady Lloyd, a 2025 All-SAA Honorable Mention, has started every game and tallied a goal and two assists.

On the Maryville College Scots: The Scots are a completely unfamiliar opponent for Trinity, as the programs have met only once in their history, a 3-1 home loss for the Tigers back in 1994.

Last season, the Maryville Scots posted a solid 9-4-6 record, defeating Covenant College on penalties in the CCS Tournament Final to advance to the NCAA National Tournament, but ultimately fell 3-1 in the first round to Trinity's eventual NCAA Semifinal opponent Emory University. The Scots having made the switch over to the SAA have since returned many key contributors, including the 2025 CCS Offensive Player of the Year, 2025 CCS Rookie of the Year, and five of their six 2025 All-CCS awardees.

Maryville has had an up-and-down fall, going 4-4-4 overall and 2-2 in SAA play. The Scots split last weekend, falling 1-0 to Sewanee before beating Centre 3-0, the same Centre side Trinity topped 4-0 two weeks ago. Earlier in conference play, they routed Millsaps 6-1 but fell 2-0 to Rhodes. Holding a shaky 1-2-3 home record, the Scots will be looking to bounce back against Trinity in the Tigers' first-ever visit to the MC Soccer Complex. Before that, Maryville hosts No. 11 Southwestern on Friday, Oct. 23.

Players to watch: Sophomore forward Ben Brophy, the 2025 CCS Rookie of the Year, has appeared in every game and leads the Scots with six goals. Junior forward Brady Hammer, the 2025 CCS Offensive Player of the Year, has also played every game, adding five goals and two assists. In the midfield, sophomore Nate Selig Pineda has started every game and ranks second on the team in minutes played. Senior defender Will Gallagher, a 2025 All-CCS First Team selection, has started 11 games this season but appears to have picked up a knock and is questionable for this weekend.

Looking Ahead

Trinity returns home for the final weekend of SAA regular-season play, hosting Rhodes on Senior Night on Friday, October 30th, at 7:30 p.m. before closing out the regular season against Millsaps on Sunday, November 1st, at 1:30 p.m.
