SAN ANTONIO – Trinity Women's Basketball defeated UMHB in their season opener, 93-56. The gap came from the 56 points the Tigers got off the Crusader's 47 turnovers.
Trinity had an almost brand-new starting lineup, with the only familiar face being
Livy Sauvageau (Houston, Texas / Second Baptist).
Jaclyn Silva (Dallas, Texas / John Paul II),
Alina Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill),
Allison Even (Tucson, Arizona / Salpointe Catholic), and
Emma Winans (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) were the new faces in the starting lineup.
The Rundown
The Tigers came out with a fiery presence on defense, forcing the Crusaders to shoot 0% from the field and score just four points, all from the free-throw line. Trinity capitalized on UMHB's offensive struggles, putting up 27 points of their own. Winans got off to a quick start with six points in the quarter, followed by
Cyanna Cavazos (San Antonio, Texas / Smithson Valley), who added five.
The Tigers' lead only continued to grow in the second quarter. Trinity's full-court pressure led to numerous turnovers for the Crusaders, making it difficult for UMHB to find offensive opportunities. However, the Crusaders began to capitalize on a few possessions, scoring ten points in the quarter, but was still less than half of Trinity's production.
Ivory Scott (Waco, Texas / Waco) led the way with eight points, while Winans had another six-point quarter. Going into halftime, the Tigers held a commanding 47-14 lead.
UMHB came out with a strong presence in the third quarter, finding ways to break through Trinity's pressure. Their shooting percentages improved, and they began finding open shooters beyond the three-point line. However, this didn't faze the Tigers. The starters continued to hold their own, but the second unit made an impact when they entered the game, combining for 17 of Trinity's 29 points in the quarter.
In the final quarter, the Crusaders finally seemed to find their footing, putting up 22 points compared to Trinity's 17. The Tigers struggled to find the net, shooting just 29% from the field while also committing seven turnovers in the quarter. Despite their late push from UMHB, the Tigers maintained a comfortable lead, and everyone on the roster was able to see the court.
Winans led the Tigers in scoring with 18 points, Hernandez led the team in assists with four, and Sauvageau and Even led in rebounds each with four each.
Coach Speak
"The New Kids on the Block are performing in Vegas," said Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "People pay good money to watch them limp around the stage and sing their hits. We have some New Kids on the Block too, but they don't limp, and they play for free, and they most definitely have THE RIGHT STUFF. ONWARD."
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, the Tigers will face off against the McMurry Warhawks (1-0) at 3pm in Calgaard gym. The two teams faced off last year in a tough matchup for the Tigers, who fell 69-93. McMurry just faced off against Austin College yesterday, Nov. 6, and won 66-60, earning their first win of the season.
