ATLANTA – The Trinity men's basketball team (18-5, 10-2 SAA) kept rolling tonight with a 77-54 drubbing of Oglethorpe University (6-16, 3-8 SAA). The Tigers got off to a strong start shooting the ball and never looked back on their way to a convincing win.
Trinity was money from the field in the first half to create an early gap in the scoreboard, hitting 59% of their field goals and 50% of their threes in the first period. Despite poorer shooting in the second half, their game totals still came out to 50% from the field and 36% from three. The Tiger defense hounded Oglethorpe tonight, who was only able to make 36% of their field goals and 29% of their threes. The rebounding gap was big in favor of Trinity tonight, who grabbed 42 rebounds to the Stormy Petrels' 29. They were also dominant in the paint tonight, scoring 46 points down low while Oglethorpe managed just 16.
Having ensured the win early, the Tigers spread the scoring love to get 12 players a bucket on the night.
Jackson Lawson (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) led all scorers with 14 points and 3 rebounds on 75% (6-8) shooting from the field and 100% (2-2) from three.
Will Bronson (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit) had his fourth straight double-double, recording 12 points and 11 rebounds, along with 2 assists and 1 block, on 66% (6-9) shooting.
The Rundown
Oglethorpe managed to stay competitive for the first few minutes of the game, but it didn't take long for the Tiger offensive attack to assert itself. With 16:06 to play, after three lead changes and two ties, the onslaught began. With a 22-3 run marked by deadly shooting and hounding defense, Trinity found themselves up 33-12 with 7:44 to go. Although the Stormy Petrels responded with an 11-2 run of their own, it did not create a big enough dent in the scoreboard to make the Tigers uncomfortable in their lead. Heading into halftime, Trinity held a 41-29 lead.
It was all Trinity out of the break, opening up the second half with a 7-2 run to reassert their lead, 48-31 with 16:33 to go. The Stormy Petrels responded with a 13-6 run over the next four minutes but were unable to bring the deficit back within single digits. With 12:31 to go, the Trinity lead was 54-44. It was a game of runs, as just five minutes later, the Tigers scored nine unanswered points to put things firmly out of reach, up 68-47 with 6:01 to play. After some fight from the Stormy Petrels, Trinity scored the final 7 points of the game, holding Oglethorpe scoreless over the last three minutes to leave Atlanta with a 77-54 win.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers will take on Berry College (9-13, 5-6 SAA) in their penultimate regular season game on Feb. 15. Looking forward to the SAA Championships, which begins on Feb. 26, Trinity is sitting pretty, as they've long locked up one of the top two spots in the SAA, and thus a first-round tournament bye.
