SAN ANTONIO – The top-ranked Trinity University baseball team took a 6-5 loss in the series finale against Babson College (MA) on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (5-2) did win the series over the Beavers (1-2) after winning 8-5 in Friday's opener and 9-4 in Saturday's matchup. After falling behind 4-2 in the third inning, Trinity rallied to tie things up in the fourth; however, Babson went back ahead with a run in the sixth and then held on for the win, as Trinity left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
Mattias Rytting (Houston, Texas / Bellaire) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, leading a group of four Tiger players with at least two hits in the game.
Grant Anderson (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) was 2-for-5 with one RBI,
John Ramsey (Austin, Texas / Westwood) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and
Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Callen Singhania (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit) finished 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Despite giving up just one run on four hits over 3.1 innings and striking out four batters,
Brandon Morio (Austin, Texas / McNeil) was charged with the loss in relief, falling to 0-1 on the season.
Trinity struck first in the bottom of the second, combining three hits with a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to net a pair of runs.
Evan Kuhl (Boerne, Texas / Champion) singled to shallow right to plate the first run of the game, then Singhania drove a sac fly to right to make it 2-0. Babson answered immediately, though, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks to take a 4-2 lead. Rytting stroked a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth to get the Tiger offense going, which eventually tied the game with two runs in the inning. Singhania drove in his second run in as many at-bats, then Anderson came through with a single through the infield to bring in Singhania and make it a 4-4 game.
After a scoreless fifth, Babson singled to open the sixth inning and then after a sac bunt, scored on a double to take a 5-4 lead. Trinity loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but the Beavers escaped with a strikeout to maintain the slim lead. The Tigers stranded two more runners in the bottom of the seventh, despite the first two hitters reaching with singles.
In the ninth, Babson drew a leadoff walk that eventually led to another run on a sac fly to right, making it a 6-4 game with just three outs to go. Lustina and Ramsey both walked to start the ninth, putting the tying run on base with no outs. Babson got the next two hitters to strike out, but then pinch-hitter
Jack Henning (Houston, Texas / Houston Christian) drew a walk to load the bases.
Will Dixon (Houston, Texas / Memorial) also drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to 6-5, but another strikeout left the Tiger rally just short, and Babson took the win.
