SAN ANTONIO – The ninth-ranked Trinity University baseball team suffered a 22-9 loss against Tufts University (MA) on Sunday afternoon, tying the weekend series between the two teams at one win each.
The Tigers (8-6) handed the Jumbos (6-1) their first loss on Saturday afternoon, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to earn a 6-5 win. Today looked to be a slugfest early as both teams scored three runs in the first inning, but while Tufts continued its offensive onslaught, the Tigers were held to just two more scores until the ninth inning. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Trinity scored four runs on four hits – including a three-run homer – to nearly double its output for the game.
Will Hellings (Summit, N.J. / Summit) started the game on the mound for the Tigers, falling to 1-2 this season after allowing seven runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings. He was one of eight Trinity pitchers in the game, with none of the relievers lasting more than 1.2 innings.
Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Tiger offense and
Cam Champness (Katy, Texas / Taylor) was 1-for-3 with the three-run homer in the ninth.
Jack Henning (Houston, Texas / Houston Christian) also had two hits and scored a run off the bench.
Callen Singhania (Dallas, Texas / Jesuit) was 1-for-1 with one run scored, one RBI, and also drew two walks.
After the teams scored three runs each in the first, Trinity actually took a brief 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third after taking advantage of a two-out error by the Jumbos. Tufts answered by scoring seven runs in the top of the fourth, then put the game out of reach with six runs in both the fifth and sixth to lead 22-4. The Tigers scored by way of another error in the bottom of the seventh, then had the four-run ninth to account for the final score.
