SAN ANTONIO – The #1 Trinity University baseball team lost the final game of a three-game series with #7 Kean University (NJ), falling 8-3 on Monday afternoon.
The Tigers (6-5) lost two of the three games this weekend against the Cougars (7-3-1). Today's game was rescheduled from Sunday afternoon due to weather. Trinity took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Kean tied things up with two runs of its own in the third. Neither team scored again until the seventh when Kean hammered two home runs and took an 8-2 lead. The Tigers got one run back in the ninth but could not mount a comeback after falling behind late.
Trinity was limited to just six total hits in the game, though half of those were extra-base hits – including a first-inning home run by
Sawyer Haynes (Waco, Texas / Midway). Haynes drove in two of the three runs with his home run, going 1-for-2 with a walk in the game.
Jack Spenst (Corpus Christi, Texas / Ray) drove in the run in the ninth as a pinch-hitter.
Grant Anderson (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) and
Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake) both hit doubles in the game, while Anderson and
Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) scored the other two runs.
Matthew Azordegan (Madison, Miss. / St. Andrew's Episcopal) got the start for the Tigers and made his season debut, allowing two runs on three hits over 2.2 innings of work, and striking out three batters.
Andrew Mason (Austin, Texas / Anderson) suffered the loss in relief and dropped to 0-1 this season.
Trinity will be back on the field on Wednesday evening, hosting Muhlenberg College (PA) at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers will then host a three-game series against Tufts University (MA) that begins on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
