SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Trinity University baseball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 7-4 loss at the University of St. Thomas (TX) on Tuesday night at Constellation Stadium.
The Tigers (19-12) scored all four runs in the first three innings against the Celts (13-19) but were shut out over the final six frames as St. Thomas pulled away for the win. Trinity out-hit UST 11-9 but also committed three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Khalfani Coney (Los Angeles, Calif. / Crossroads School) and
Grant Anderson (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) did most of the damage offensively for the Tigers, combining for five hits, two runs, and three RBI. Coney went 3-for-5 in the game, while Anderson was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and both players scored a run.
Will Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) was 1-for-2 with two walks and
Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Will Taylor (Greenwood Village, Colo. / Cherry Creek) took his first loss of the season in relief and fell to 5-1 on the year.
Tait Johnson (Round Rock, Texas / Stony Point) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief and allowed just three hits to go with three strikeouts.
Trinity jumped in front early as Anderson delivered a two-run single in the top of the first inning. Woodward and
Thomas Moss (Sugar Land, Texas / Kempner) started the inning with back-to-back singles and Baker then bunted both into scoring position. Anderson's hit to center brought in both runners, but a double play kept it from being an even bigger inning. St. Thomas got a two-out double in the bottom of the inning to get on the board, but the Tigers got that run back in the second. Coney singled and stole second, then moved up on a hit by
Michael Lustina (Austin, Texas / Westlake).
Nicholas Jones (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had another hit to make it a 3-1 game, but UST escaped without any further damage.
The Celts took advantage of two Trinity errors in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead after two. Coney tied the game with an RBI double in the top of the third as the Tigers also took advantage of an error to put a runner on with one out. Trinity left the bases loaded in the inning, though, and would not score again the rest of the way. St. Thomas took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits and a walk to lead 6-4. The Celts added an insurance run in the eighth to take a 7-4 lead. The Tigers left runners on base in all but two of the final six innings and came up short in the end.
