SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity softball team swept a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader from Millsaps College (MS) on Saturday, winning 4-1 and 5-0 to ensure the weekend series win.
The Tigers (25-8-1, 14-3, SAA) gave up just one run on seven hits across the two games against the Majors (21-13, 7-7 SAA) today. Millsaps scored what turned out to be its only run of the day in the third inning of game one, but Trinity scored all four of its runs in the fourth to take game one. The Tigers gave up just three hits in the game two shutout, with all three hits coming in the first two innings.
Megan Kriechbaum (Cedar Hills, Utah / Pleasant Grove) tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout in the second game, striking out four batters to earn the win and improve to 8-4 this season.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nev. / Academy of Arts Careers and Technology) gave up just one run on four hits, striking out three batters in her complete-game victory that moved her to 15-4 this season.
Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) had two hits in each game, going 4-for-5 in the doubleheader. Koelewyn also contributed offensively with three hits and three RBI, connecting on a double in each game.
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, Calif. / Agoura Hills) had two hits in the opener, while
Hannah Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Taft) had a three-run pinch-hit triple to put the Tigers up 4-1 in the first game.
The Rundown
Both teams came up with hits in the first inning of game one, but it wasn't until the third that Millsaps changed the score for the first time. A leadoff single led to a run scoring on a sac bunt and an error, putting the visitors in front 1-0. Boudreaux doubled with two outs in the third for the first Tiger runner to reach second base, but she was stranded and the score remained unchanged until the fourth. Tagawa got the rally started with a one-out single, followed by a game-tying double from Koelewyn.
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) singled and stole second to put two runners in scoring position, then
Mariana Garcia (Goodyear, Ariz. / Canyon View) walked to load the bases with two outs. That's when Flores came in to pinch-hit and promptly scorched a 1-1 pitch into the gap in right-center to clear the bases and put Trinity up 4-1. Koelewyn only allowed two baserunners the rest of the way and the Tigers cruised to victory.
Both teams stranded runners in the first inning of game two and Millsaps had four left on base in the first two innings. The Tigers were the first on the board, though, with a pair of clutch two-out hits.
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, Calif. / Freedom) walked to follow a one-out hit from Boudreaux, then after an out, Tagawa gave Trinity the lead with a hit to center. Koelewyn followed with a two-run double and the Tigers went up 3-0 after the prolific third inning. Boudreaux got things going again with a leadoff single in the fifth, then
Meagan Brooks (Graham, Texas / Graham) scored on Baltzell's triple on a 3-1 count.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) then singled in Baltzell for a 5-0 Trinity lead, which was more than enough for Kriechbaum. After allowing two hits with two outs in the second, she retired 14 of the next 15 batters. The first two batters of the seventh reached base as Millsaps threatened to break up the shutout, but Kriechbaum retired the next three batters in order, ending the day with a strikeout and a shutout victory.
