Jerheme Urban ‘03 will embark on his 12th season in charge of Trinity’s football team in 2025, having posted a record of 79-30 over his first 11 seasons as the Tiger head coach. Coach Urban has worked with Trinity’s quarterbacks since taking over the position in November 2013. Since joining the Southern Athletic Associa-tion in 2017, Trinity holds a record of 48-8 (.857) in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play under Coach Urban’s leadership.

Trinity won its first SAA Championship in 2019 and the Tigers have won 37 of their last 40 conference games beginning with that season. Trinity won all five of its SAA titles over the last six years – including four straight conference championships and four straight appearances in the NCAA Playoffs heading into this year. The Tigers have also lost just six regular season games since 2019, amassing 47 victories and a winning percentage of .887 during that stretch.

Following the 2021 season, Coach Urban became the first person in D3football.com history to be named a Regional Coach of the Year after also earning All-America honors from the organization as a player. He was also named the American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2023, and is a three-time SAA Coach of the Year (2019, 2021, 2022). In 2024, Coach Urban was selected as the Frosty Westering National Coach of the Year by the Fellowship of Christian Athletics.

During his tenure, Coach Urban has had 13 All-Americans, 40 All-Region performers, and 141 All-Conference selections – including 14 Conference Players of the Year. The Tigers have won six consecutive SAA Special Teams Player of the Year awards, with Tyler Huettel winning the last two. Huettel earned All-America honors from five different organizations in 2024 and earned All-America recognition in three of his four seasons. Coach Urban has had two recent former players sign professional football contracts after graduation. Huettel signed with the San Antonio Gunslingers of the Indoor Football League in 2025, while Tiger quarterback Tucker Horn signed a contract with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in the Fall of 2024. Huettel also became just the sixth player in Trinity football history to win five or more All-American awards in his career, tying Roy Hampton (Urban’s former teammate) with a total of seven such honors.

Coach Urban has also continued to emphasize success both on and off the field for Trinity football players. Over the past four years, he has seen at least 50 Tiger players earn a spot on the SAA Academic Honor Roll, which requires a GPA of 3.25 or better during the Fall semester. Over his entire tenure, which also includes two seasons in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Coach Urban has had 390 players earn a spot on the conference Honor Roll. He has also coached two College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans® in Horn (2023) and Ezra Gore (2024), as well as 27 total Academic All-District® honorees.

Prior to joining the Trinity University football coaching staff in 2012 and 2013, Urban enjoyed a nine-year career as a wide receiver in the National Football League. He played for the Seattle Seahawks, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He caught 91 passes for 1,256 yards and eight touchdowns during his career, and he also played in the 2008 Super Bowl with the Cardinals.

As a student-athlete from 1999-03, Coach Urban excelled in both football and track & field, and was inducted into the Trinity Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019. He was a D3football.com First Team All-American and a Second Team selection by the Football Gazette, leading the 2002 Tigers to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl - the NCAA Division III Championship Game. Coach Urban still holds several school records in football and track & field, and he was the first athlete in SCAC history to be a four-time SCAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships as part of the 4x400-meter relay (2000) and in the 400-meter hurdles (2002).

Coach Urban earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity in social studies composite, with a focus in history. He also met his future wife, the former Emily Goodwin (herself a standout on the track & field team and a 2003 graduate), while at Trinity. The couple have a daughter, Liesl, and twin sons, Luke and Barrett.

Coach Urban is a native of Victoria, Texas, and graduated from the former Stroman High School there. He also enjoys his status as an amateur barber.
