Marcus Coleman will enter his fifth year on the Trinity football staff as the Defensive Backs coach and rejoins the staff as a full-time coach. The fourth-year coach was recently awarded the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their training camp. 

Coach Coleman is responsible for defensive backs and special teams. In 2022, Coleman saw defensive back Trey King and safety Ezra Gore earn All-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) honors. Coach Coleman also saw return specialist BJ Stewart earn All-SAA, All-Region, and All-American honors for the Tiger Special Teams. 

In the fall 2021 season, Jeremy Irving and Trey King both earned All-SAA honors as Defensive Backs. Irving was also named a Second Team D3football.com All-American. 

Coach Coleman previously served as the head coach of the Tucson (AZ) Sugar Skulls of the Indoor Football League. He earlier served as the defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator for the Iowa Barnstormers. Coach Coleman’s first coaching job was with the Tri-Cities Fever.

Coach Coleman was an 11-year veteran of the National Football League. He played for the New York Jets from 1996-2001 (a fifth-round draft pick), the Houston Texans from 2002-2005, and the Dallas Cowboys in 2006. In 2002, he led the NFL in passes defended with 30 in his column. Coach Coleman paced the Texans in 2003 with seven interceptions and was the American Football Conference Player of the Month in September of that year.

All told, Coach Coleman posted 517 tackles during his career, snagged 25 interceptions, and scored two touchdowns.  

Coach Coleman was a standout defensive back at Texas Tech University from 1992-1995. He was a First Team All-American in 1995, as well as being selected for the All-Southwest Conference Consensus First Team.

He left the Red Raiders as the career leader of four interception returns for touchdowns, as well as most blocked kicks in a season with three to his credit. Coach Coleman posted 256 career tackles, nine interceptions, and six blocked kicks. He also received All-SWC track & field honors in the long jump and triple jump.

Coach Coleman was named to the All-Time Texas Tech Football Team in 2008 and was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.

He is a native of Dallas, Texas, and attended Lake Highlands High School.
