Box Score San Antonio - Two Trinity University senior
student-athletes have been selected to receive the NCAA Ethnic
Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for
Careers in Athletics.
Emily Loeffler of San Antonio (O'Connor) was awarded the ethnic
minority scholarship and Megan Guest of Richmond, Texas (Terry),
received the women's award.
There are a total of 13 recipients in each category. An honoree
receives a $6,000 scholarship for one year of full-time graduate
study at an NCAA member institution.
Loeffler became Trinity's first All-American - male or
female -in cross country. She also earned All-America honors
in track and field. Loeffler, who has also received accolades from
the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), is majoring in
business administration, with a concentration in marketing and
management. She plans on attending either the University of Texas
at San Antonio, studying health and kinesiology, or the
University of Houston for exercise science.
"My career goal is becoming a cross country and track and field
coach at the collegiate level," Loeffler said. "Having the
opportunity to attend a graduate program in the field of
kinesiology or exercise science would increase my
understanding in the area of sports, which will inevitably lead to
me becoming the best coach I could be."
Trinity's new track and field coach, David Svoboda, has been
impressed with Loeffler's abilities.
"Emily has been a great help in my first year here, Svoboda
said. "I am also impressed with Emily's focus, goal setting, and
dedication to achieving her dreams."
The Tigers' cross country coach, Jenny Breuer, coached Loeffler
in cross country and track and field. Breuer decided to focus on
the cross country program, starting this year.
"Emily is a true leader, a champion, a genuine competitor and
deserves this great honor," Breuer said. "She will have a wonderful
career in athletics."
Guest, a defensive specialist on the Tiger volleyball team, was
selected for the All-SCAC First Team and the American Volleyball
Coaches Association All-South Region Honorable Mention Team.
She is majoring in sociology and plans to continue at Trinity
with the Master of Arts in Teaching program. Guest has aspirations
of being a high school social studies teacher and volleyball coach.
She then plans to move to the collegiate level.
"Receiving this award is very important to me," Guest said.
"Sports are a huge passion in my life. This scholarship will allow
me to continue that feeling by helping other young women. Trinity
has helped me grow as a person, prioritize my life in the right
ways, and give me a wider and more open mind about life."
Trinity's volleyball coach, Julie Jenkins, feels Guest is
perfect for this scholarship and the coaching profession.
"This NCAA scholarship couldn't have gone to a more deserving
student-athlete," Jenkins said. "There is no doubt that Megan Guest
will become a successful coach in women's athletics. She will be a
great model for young women by the example she sets."
