Belton, Texas - The Trinity Tigers baseball
team shut out the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders 7-0 Wednesday in a
non-conference game at Red Murff Field.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, and was postponed
because of wet field conditions.
Trinity improved to 3-1, and Mary Hardin-Baylor dropped to 3-2.
The two teams will meet again April 6 at E.M. Stevens Field.
The Tigers were first on the scoreboard, with one run in the top
of the third inning. Senior first baseman Evan Jones cracked a
single to right field, scoring first-year shortstop Jonathan Hall.
Trinity picked up three more runs in the sixth, keyed by RBIs by
first-year second baseman Kevin Clements, senior catcher Kyle
Felix, and Hall. Jones had an RBI-single in the eighth inning, and
the Tigers closed out the scoring with two runs in the ninth. The
final stanza was highlighted by Hall's RBI-double, and an RBI by
senior center fielder John Paillet.
Hall, from Kenilworth, Ill. (New Trier), batted 4-6 with two
RBIs, a double (his second of the season), and two runs scored.
Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), hit 3-4 with two
RBIs and a walk. Felix, from Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College
Prep), went 3-5 with an RBI, a double (his third), and one run.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Klimesh of Wilmette, Ill. (New
Trier), made his first start, and second appearance of the season,
capturing the victory. Klimesh went the distance and allowed six
hits and four walks. He also recorded nine strikeouts in the
shutout.
Trinity scored seven earned runs, swatted 16 hits, committed no
errors, and left 13 players on base. Mary Hardin-Baylor did not
commit an error, and stranded seven batters.
The Tigers open their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
campaign over the weekend, with three home games against Austin
College. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., as does Sunday's
single game.
