Jones hit two home runs as the Tigers opened their Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule by taking a doubleheader
from the Austin College Kangaroos Saturday at E.M. Stevens Field.
The Tigers took the seven-inning opener 15-3, and won the
nine-inning second game 12-9.
Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), hit a two-run
homer in the first game, and then swatted a solo shot in the
second, his third round-tripper of the young season. On the day,
Jones hit 5-5, with five RBIs, four runs, and four walks, three of
which came in the second game.
Trinity improved to 5-1 and 2-0 SCAC; and Austin College stands
at 2-5 and 0-2 SCAC. The two teams will play a single game at 1
p.m. Sunday.
In the opening game, the Tigers took an early 3-0 lead after the
first inning. The Kangaroos put two runs on the board in the top of
the second. Jones' second-inning home run gave Trinity a 5-2 lead.
Austin College scored a run in the top of the fifth, but Trinity
countered with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. The
Tigers produced three runs in the sixth, thanks to a solo home run
by junior outfielder Dylan Early, and a two-run homer by junior
outfielder Kevin Calbick. Calbick, from Burnaby British Columbia
(Burnaby South Secondary), hit 2-4 with three RBIs, and scored
three runs.
Sophomore outfielder Nick Pappas of Los Angeles (Loyola) batted
3-4 with four RBIs and one run. Junior catcher Kyle Felix of
Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep), hit 3-5 with three RBIs
and three runs. Junior right-hander Noah Solomon of Austin, Texas
(Anderson), hurled five innings and upped his record to 2-0.
Solomon allowed three earned runs, six hit, two walks, and struck
out three batters.
Trinity scored 15 earned runs, collected 14 hits, made one
error, and left six players on base. Austin College scored three
earned runs, made seven hits, committed no errors, and stranded
seven batters.
In the second game, Trinity jumped out two a 7-2 lead after four
innings. The scoring run included the home run by Jones in the
second inning. But Austin College took an 8-7 lead by scoring six
runs in the top of the sixth inning. Trinity responded with three
runs in the bottom of the inning, keyed by a two-RBI double by
junior infielder Kevin Jackson of Bellevue, Wash. (O'Dea). The
Kangaroos added a run in the seventh, but Pappas hit his second
homer of the season, with one player on base, in the eighth.
Pappas hit 4-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Felix batted
hit 2-5 with three RBIs and one run.
Senior right-hander Mike Hunter of Corpus Christi, Texas (King),
was Trinity's fifth pitcher. Hunter (1-0) picked up the win by
pitching the final 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs, four
hits, two walks, and fanned six Kangaroo batters.
Trinity scored 12 earned runs, made 16 hits, committed two
errors, and left seven players on base. Austin College scored eight
earned runs, accounted for eight hits, made no errors, and left
nine batters on base.
