San Antonio - The Trinity University Tigers
swept their weekend Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series
with a 12-2 eight-inning run-rule victory over the Austin College
Kangaroos Sunday afternoon n at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity (6-1, 3-0 SCAC), which has won five straight games, took
Saturday's doubleheader 15-3 and 12-9. Austin College dropped to
2-6 and 0-3 SCAC. The two teams will meet again April 10-11 at
Sherman, Texas.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning,
highlighted by a two-RBI double by junior catcher Kyle Felix.
Trinity scored one run in each of the second and fourth innings, to
lead 5-0. Austin College produced a run in the top of the seventh
inning, but Trinity responded with five in the bottom half.
First-year second baseman Kevin Clements smacked a three run home
run, his first homer of the season. The Kangaroos put a run on the
board in the eighth, but the run-rule went into effect as the
Tigers scored two runs.
Clements, from Pacific Grove, Calif. (Pacific Grove), batted 3-4
with three RBIs and two runs. Felix, from Woodside, Calif.
(Bellarmine College Prep), hit 2-4 with two RBIs, a double, and two
runs scored. Junior outfielder Kevin Jackson of Bellevue, Wash.
(O'Dea), went 3-5 with two RBIs, one run. and two doubles.
Tiger junior right-hander Mike Panozzo (2-0) went the distance
and earned the win. Panozzo, from Houston (Clear Lake), allowed two
earned runs, eight hits, one walk, and struck out three batters. He
was earlier selected as the SCAC Pitcher of the Week.
Trinity scored seven earned runs, blasted 16 hits, made one
error, and left nine players on base. Austin College had two earned
runs, eight hits, five errors, and stranded three batters.
