San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team had its
six-game winning streak snapped in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to
Brandeis University on Friday night at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity (7-2) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after scoring in
each of the first three innings, but a five-run fifth put Brandeis
ahead 6-5. The Judges took advantage of a costly Tiger error
that allowed four unearned runs to score in the inning.
The Tigers tied the game after a pair of errors in the ninth,
but a 10th-inning solo homer by Brandeis allowed the visitors to
tie the season series. Trinity defeated Brandeis 15-7 on
Tuesday night.
Trinity's Evan Jones had a pair of hits in the loss, including a
hit to set up the tying run with one out in the ninth. Jones
smashed a single past a diving second baseman, then gave way to
pinch runner John Paillet. Paillet proceeded to steal second,
but the throw sailed into center field to allow Paillet to move up
to third. The center fielder then tried to make a play to
third, but another errant throw allowed Paillet to tie the game.
Pinch-hitter Chris Walden singled up the middle to lead off the
10th, and pinch-runner Will Keiser promptly stole second; however,
Trinity's next two batters popped up to the infield. Jonathan Hall
then looped a ball into short right field for what seemed like a
game-tying hit, but second baseman John O'Brion made a diving catch
to seal the win.
Noah Solomon went 6.2 innings and struck out 11 batters, giving
up just one earned run on seven hits. He allowed six runs
total, though, and left the game down a run in the seventh.
In the top of the 10th, it was Zach Malis for Brandeis that hit
the game-winning homer, despite the fact that he tried to call
timeout at the start of the pitcher's wind-up. The umpire
didn't grant timeout, and Malis put the Judges ahead for good.
Trinity and Brandeis conclude their three-game season series
tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
