Conway, Ark. - The defending champion Hendrix
Warriors swept a weekend Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference
baseball series with the Trinity Tigers, by a 7-4 win Sunday at
Warrior Field.
Hendrix, which beat the Tigers 13-12 Saturday, improved to 5-5
and 2-4 SCAC. Trinity now stands at 8-4 and 3-2 SCAC. The two teams
will meet again in a three-game series March 27-28 at E.M. Stevens
Field.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning,
on an RBI single by junior catcher Kyle Felix. The Warriors tied
the score at 1-1, as catcher Brad Grinstead hit a solo home run.
Hendrix widened the lead to 7-1 after five innings. Trinity closed
the gap as Felix smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning, his
third of the season. Tiger senior first baseman Evan Jones hit his
second home run in as many days, a solo shot in the eighth inning.
It marked Jones' fifth home run of the campaign. The game ended in
the top of the ninth, with a Trinity runner on third base.
Felix, from Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep), batted
3-5 with three RBIs, a double (his seventh), a home run, and one
run scored. Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), hit
1-3 with an RBI, home run, and one run.
Junior right-hander Michael Panozzo of Houston (Clear Lake) was
the starting pitcher, the first of three, and took the loss.
Panozzo (3-2) allowed five earned runs, four hits, one walk, and
struck out two Warriors, in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Trinity scored three earned runs, made eight hits, committed one
error, and left eight players on base. Hendrix scored seven earned
runs, collected eight hits, made one error, and stranded two
batters.
The Tigers will host Texas Lutheran in a non-conference game at
7 p.m. Tuesday.
