Trinity Baseball Splits Opening Doubleheader With Schreiner

The Tigers took a 9-1 lead in the first game, after five innings of play. Senior first baseman Evan Jones of Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), hit the Tigers' first home run of the campaign, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Schreiner mounted a comeback by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth. But Trinity countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by first-year shortstop Jonathan Hall of Kenilworth, Ill. (New Trier).

The Mountaineers added a run in the top of the eighth, but Trinity again produced three runs in the bottom stanza. Schreiner scored three runs in the top of the ninth, but the margin was too wide to overcome.

Hall batted 3-4 with five RBIs and two runs. Jones went 3-5 with three RBIs, and scored a run. Kevin Clements, a first-year second baseman from Pacific Grove, Calif. (Pacific Grove), accounted for three of the Tigers' runs. while batting 1-2. Senior outfielder John Paillet of Los Angeles (Loyola) hit 3-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Junior right-hander Noah Solomon of Austin, Texas (Anderson), the first of six pitchers, was credited with the victory, and improved to 1-0. Solomon, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, hurled 5.2 innings, and allowed two earned runs and three walks, while striking out nine batters.

Trinity scored 15 runs (12 earned), cracked 20 hits, committed one error, and left 14 players on base. Schreiner scored 10 runs (nine earned), and had 13 hits, three errors, and stranded 11 players.

The second game was a different story, as Schreiner led 4-0 by runs scored in the second inning. Trinity tightened the score to 3-4, as two Tigers swatted home runs in the third inning. Senior catcher Kyle Felix of Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep), hit a solo homer, and sophomore outfielder Nick Pappas of Los Angeles (Loyola), had a two-run homer. That would prove to be Trinity's final score of the game.

Schreiner scored one run in the fifth, and four in the sixth, to pull away. A ninth-inning rally by the Tigers fell short.

Felix hit 2-5 with an RBI and a run, while Pappas batted 1-4 with two RBIs and one run.

Senior right-hander Clint Robertson of Rockwall (Heritage), the first of six pitchers in the game, hurled the first 5.1 innings and was charged with the loss.

Schreiner scored nine runs (all earned), and had 11 hits, no errors, with eight players left on base. Trinity scored three runs (all earned), with six hits, one error, and 13 batters on base.
