Kerrville, Texas - The Trinity Tigers baseball
team won the weekend series with the Schreiner Mountaineers, by an
8-5 victory Sunday at Mountaineer Field.
Trinity (2-1) split a doubleheader with Schreiner (1-2) on
Saturday, in season-opening games at E.M. Stevens Field. The Tigers
won the first game 15-10, and Schreiner took the second 9-3.
Schreiner took an early lead Sunday, by scoring one run in the
second inning. The Tigers committed two errors during the inning.
Trinity bounced back with two runs in the top of the third, on RBIs
by sophomore designated hitter Patrick Frasier, and junior second
baseman Dom Robusto.
The Tigers widened the lead with four runs in the fourth inning.
Robusto highlighted the scoring, with a two-RBI single.
Schreiner put another run on the board in the fifth inning, and
Trinity led 6-2. The Tigers produced two more runs in the sixth,
keyed by an RBI-triple by sophomore outfielder Nick Pappas. The
Mountaineers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, on two
hits and one Tiger error. Following a one-hit ninth inning, Trinity
closed out the game in the final stanza, as the Mountaineers had
one hit and a stolen base.
Senior catcher Kyle Felix of Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College
Prep), hit 4-5 with an RBI and three runs.
Robusto, from Laguna Beach, Calif. (Laguna Beach), batted 1-3
with three RBIs. Pappas was 2-4 with one RBI and two runs. Frasier
went 2-5 with and RBI and a run.
Junior right-hander Michael Panozzo of Houston (Clear Lake) was
the starting pitcher, and got the nod. Panozzo (1-0) allowed two
runs (none earned), five hits, two walks, and fanned eight batters
in seven innings of work.
Trinity scored eight runs (all earned), accumulated 17 hits,
made six errors, and left 11 players on base. Schreiner scored five
runs (three earned), made eight hits, two errors, and stranded 11
batters.
The Tigers travel to Belton, Texas, Tuesday for a 2 p.m. game
with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Trinity begins its SCAC campaign next
Saturday, in a home doubleheader with Austin College at 1 p.m. The
two teams will play a single game next Sunday at 1 p.m. In 2009,
the Tigers advanced to their 14th SCAC final in 18
seasons.
