San Antonio – The Trinity Tiger baseball
team beat the University of Dallas Crusaders 14-9 Saturday night in
a non-conference game at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity improved to 16-5, and Dallas now stands at 4-14. A
doubleheader was originally scheduled, but a single game, later in
the day, was played because of field conditions. The two teams will
play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, with three runs in the
first inning. Senior designated hitter Chris Walden cracked a
two-RBI double to right center field. Walden, from Phoenix (Brophy
College Prep), batted 3-5 with two RBIs and one run. Dallas
tightened the score with two runs in the second, but Trinity added
three more in the bottom half of the inning.
Trinity exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning. Senior
first baseman Evan Jones hit his seventh home run of the season, a
three-run shot to right field. Jones, who collected his 22nd career
homer, batted 3-5 with five RBIs, and three runs.
The Crusaders scored three runs the next inning, and four in the
ninth, but Trinity's lead had been established.
Junior third baseman Kevin Jackson of Bellevue, Wash.
(O'Dea), batted 4-5 with three RBIs, three runs, and his
third triple of the campaign. Kevin Calbick,. a junior outfielder
from Burnaby, British Columbia (Burnaby South Secondary), hit 3-4
with an RBI and two runs.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Klimesh was the starter, and pitched
4 2/3 innings. Klimesh, from Wilmette, Ill. (New Trier), allowed
five earned runs, four hits, four walks, and struck out eight
batters. First-year right-handed pitcher Tanner Barron relieved
Klimesh in the fifth inning, and picked up the win. Barron (1-0),
from, Houston (Stratford), yielded only one walk in 1 1/3 innings,
and struck out three Crudaders. The five Tiger pitchers allowed
seven earned runs, six hits, and eight walks.
The Tigers scored 14 earned runs off four Crusaders hurlers,
smacked 16 hits, made four errors, and left nine players on base.
Dallas committed two errors and also stranded nine runners.
