Georgetown, Texas - The Trinity Tigers baseball
team swept a weekend Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series
with an 8-7 win over the Southwestern Pirates Sunday afternoon at
Rockwell Field.
Trinity, which captured Saturday's doubleheader, upped its
record to 12-4 and 6-2 SCAC. Southwestern dropped to 3-16 and 0-8
SCAC. The two teams will play a two-game series April 2-3 at E.M.
Stevens Field.
The game started with the Tigers scoring two runs in the top of
the first inning. Kyle Felix and Evan Jones each had extra-base
hits that drove in runs. Trinity scored runs in the second and
third innings as well to take a 4-0 lead.
Then, the game became a seesaw affair. Southwestern took the
lead, with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third
inning; however, the Tigers evened it up with a run in the fourth
inning. Trinity then led 6-5 after a Nick Pappas sacrifice fly in
the seventh.
In the eighth, it was the Pirates' turn to take control, scoring
two runs in the inning.
Trinity then took the lead for good with a pair of runs in
the top of the ninth. Pappas doubled for the tying run, then
Dominick Robusto was responsible for the eventual game-winning run,
driving it home with a ground out to first base.
Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), batted 2-3
with one RBI, one run, two doubles (five for the season), and two
walks. Felix, from Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep),
hit 2-5, with one RBI, one run, a triple, and a double.
Pappas, from Los Angeles (Loyola), went 2-5 with two RBIs and a
double. Robusto, from Laguna Beach, Calif. (Laguna Beach), was 2-5
with two RBIs. Junior outfielder Dylan Early of Santa Monica,
Calif. (Santa Monica), batted 2-3, with a double.
Junior third baseman Kevin Jackson of Bellevue, Wash. (O'Dea),
had an excellent performance, batting 3-4 with one RBI, two runs
and a double.
All told, the Tigers accounted for seven doubles and a triple.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Klimesh of Wilmette, Ill. (New
Trier), was the starter, the first of four pitchers for the Tigers.
Senior right-hander Eric Binder of Burr Ridge, Ill. (Hinsdale
Central), pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and earned his first
victory of the season. Binder (1-0) allowed no runs, one hit, one
walk, and fanned two batters.
Trinity, which won its fourth straight game, scored eight earned
runs, swatted 15 hits, made two errors, and left eight players on
base. Southwestern scored seven earned runs, collected 13 hits,
committed no errors, and stranded 12 batters.
The Tigers return home to host DeSales (Pa.) in a two-game
series Wednesday and Thursday. The starting time is 7 p.m. each
day.
