San Antonio – The Trinity Tigers baseball team hit four
home runs in an 18-4 non-conference victory over the DeSales (Pa.)
Bulldogs Tuesday night at E.M. Stevens Field.
Trinity, which won its fifth straight game, improved to 13-4.
DeSales, which cracked two home runs, now stands at 1-2. The two
teams will conclude their series with a 5 p.m. game Thursday.
The Tigers scored a run in the first inning, as junior catcher
Kyle Felix crossed the plate from third base, on a balk by the
DeSales pitcher. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the second inning,
keyed by a solo home run. Trinity tied the score at 2-2 in the
second inning, as first-year shortstop Jonathan Hall hit a SAC fly
to right field, scoring senior designated hitter Chris Walden.
Trinity began to pull away, with two runs in the fourth inning.
The Tigers' home run saga began in the fifth, starting with a
solo homer by Felix to right field, his fourth of the season.
Sophomore outfielder Nick Pappas recorded his fourth home run of
the year, a solo shot to right center field. Junior outfielder
Dylan Early gave Trinity an 8-3 lead in the sixth inning, as he
swatted his fifth home run of the campaign. Early banged a two-run
homer to right center.
Then, the Tigers blew the lid off the game with 10 runs in the
seventh inning. Walden slammed a three-run round-tripper to left
field, his second home run of the season. Felix hit an RBI-double
to center field, his 11th of the season, and
41st of his career.
Felix, from Woodside, Calif. (Bellarmine College Prep), has now
hit safely in each of the first 17 games of the season. He extended
his overall hitting streak to 25 games. Felix batted 3-5 with three
RBIs, and scored three runs in the game.
Walden, from Phoenix (Brophy College Prep), went 3-5 with four
RBIs and three runs scored. Pappas, from Los Angeles (Loyola), hit
1-3 with two RBIs, and three runs. Early, from Santa Monica, Calif.
(Santa Monica), batted 1-1, with two RBIs, two runs, and three
walks.
First-year right-hander Michael Bentz of Houston (Memorial) was
the starter. Bentz allowed one earned run, two hits, two walks, and
struck out a batter in 1 1/3 innings of work. Junior right-hander
Mike Panozzo of Houston (Clear Lake), entered the game in the
second inning and captured the victory. Panozzo (4-2), the second
of four pitchers, hurled 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run,
one hit, no walks, and fanning six Bulldogs.
Trinity scored 13 earned runs off the five DeSales pitchers,
collected 14 hits, made three errors, and left eight players on
base. DeSales scored three earned runs, made only four hits,
committed four errors, and stranded four batters.
