Seguin, Texas – The Trinity Tigers
baseball team beat the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 12-1 Wednesday
afternoon in a non-conference game at Katt-Isbel Field.
Trinity (28-7), which won its ninth straight game, had a 4-2 win
on March 2 over Texas Lutheran at E.M. Stevens Field. The Bulldogs
now stand at 24-10.
The Tigers, ranked 19th by the latest d3baseball.com poll,
opened the game with a seven-run first inning. Nick Pappas hit an
RBI single, the first of two runs he drove in. Pappas, who batted
2-5, recorded his 50th RBI of the season with a triple in the
three-run third inning.
Chris Walden batted 3-5 with an RBI and two runs. Jonathan Hall
hit 3-6 with two RBI and two runs, cracking two doubles along the
way. Kevin Calbick hit 2-5 with two RBI and two runs, while Patrick
Frasier went 2-4 with two RBI.
Left-hander Ryan Lucero (4-1) was the starting pitcher and took
the victory. Lucero hurled six innings, and allowed no earned runs,
four hits, two walks, and struck out four batters. Right-hander
Joshua Fink entered in the seventh inning, and yielded two hits in
two inning of work, while recording two strikeouts.
The Tigers scored in double figures for the third straight game
and produced 15 hits in the 2-hour, 25-minute game. Texas Lutheran,
which received votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, was limited
to six hits by the Tigers pitching staff.
Trinity wraps up its regular-season home schedule Saturday and
Sunday, with three SCAC games against the Millsaps Majors.
Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., and
Sunday's single game also starts at 1 p.m.
The Tigers lead the SCAC West Division with a 13-4 mark, one
game ahead of the Majors. The weekend series will determine
seedings for the six-team, double-elimination SCAC Championship
Tournament April 22-25 at Millington, Tenn. The tournament winner
receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
