San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team hammered
out 21 hits in an 18-10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win
over Southwestern University on Friday evening at E.M. Stevens
Field.
Trinity (22-7, 10-4 SCAC) scored in all but one inning of the
game, opening up a 9-0 lead after the first two frames.
Southwestern got on the board with a pair of runs in the third,
but the Tigers answered with two more runs of its own to keep it a
nine-run advantage for the home team. In the top of the
fourth, though, Southwestern was right back in the game after
scoring six runs on five hits to cut the Tiger lead to 11-8.
After a scoreless fourth, the Tigers pushed across seven runs
over the next four innings to pull away. The Tigers also
turned four double plays on defense to help hold Southwestern to
just two runs over the final five innings. Trinity had five
home runs in the game offensively, and every starting player
recorded at least one hit.
Five different players had three hits in the game for the
Tigers. Leading hitter Evan Jones was 3-5 with four runs and
three RBI, hitting his team-leading eighth homer of the year - a
three-run shot to spark a seven-run first inning.
Kevin Jackson was 3-5 with three runs scored, while Kevin
Calbick was 3-5 with two runs and three RBI. Nick Pappas was
3-6 with a pair of runs, and Kevin Francke was 3-6 with three runs
scored. Pappas and Jackson each had homers in the game.
Chris Walden became the first player this season to hit two home
runs in the same game, smashing a pair of opposite-field home runs
for the Tigers.
Clint Robertson (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Tigers,
giving up one run on six hits over the final four innings.
Robertson walked just one batter and recorded five
strikeouts. Ryan Lucero made his first start of the season,
giving up three earned runs - seven total - on five hits in the
first 3.2 innings.
Trinity and Southwestern conclude their regular season series
with a single game tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
