Baseball Finishes Season Sweep With Lopsided Win on Saturday

San Antonio - The 24th-nationally ranked Trinity Tigers baseball team swept the SCAC five-game season series with the Southwestern Pirates by a 19-2 seven-inning, run-rule victory Saturday at E.M. Stevens Field.

Trinity (23-7, 11-4 SCAC) won yesterday's game 18-10, and took three games from the Pirates last month at Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers are leading the SCAC West Division over Millsaps College. Southwestern now stands at 11-20 and 4-11 SCAC.

Saturday's contest marked the fourth time this season the Tigers scored 18 or more runs in a game. Trinity also registered a season-high 23 hits.

The Tigers started the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Jones cracked his second home run in as many games (ninth of the season), a three-run shot to right field. Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), also hit his 24th career homer. He batted 3-5 with five RBI, and scored three runs. Jones passed Doug Grigar (1996-1999) for fourth all-time on the RBI list.

Trinity added five more runs in the next two innings to lead 9-1. The breakout inning for the Tigers was the sixth, as the offense pounded out 10 runs on 12 hits to put the game out of reach.

Chris Walden of Phoenix (Brophy College Prep), batted 3-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Jonathan Hall of Kenilworth, Ill. (New Trier), hit 4-6 and scored three runs. Nick Pappas of Los Angeles (Loyola) went 3-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Kevin Jackson of Bellevue, Wash. (O'Dea), batted 3-5 and scored three runs. Patrick Frasier of Corpus Christi, Texas (Calallen) went 3-5 with three RBI in just his sixth start this season.

Ben Klimesh of Wilmette, Ill. (New Trier) picked up the win with a solid outing on the mound. Klimesh (5-0), allowed one earned run, four hits, two walks, and struck out four batters in six innings of work.

Trinity will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game.  The Tigers defeated UMHB 7-0 in Belton in the fourth game of the season.
