San Antonio - The Trinity Tiger baseball team
continued its recent offensive onslaught with a 20-7 win over the
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night.
Trinity (24-7) and UMHB were actually locked in a tight game
until an eight-run fifth inning blew open the game for the home
team. The Tigers scored five runs in the first to answer a
run by the Crusaders in the top of the inning, then UMHB scored
three times in the third to make it a one-run game.
After an insurance run in the fourth to make it 6-4, Trinity
sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth inning to go up 14-4 and
put the game out of reach.
The Tigers had two more home runs in the game, including Evan
Jones hitting a homer in his third consecutive game. Jones
hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth, finishing off a 3-5
day at the plate that saw him score twice and total six RBI.
With a first-inning RBI single, Jones became the sixth player to
record 200 hits in a career. He also moved into third place
on Trinity's career RBI list, needing four more to move into
second.
Dyan Early hit a three-run shot in the first inning, marking the
third straight game that the Tigers have hit a three-run homer in
the first inning. Jones had the previous two to help Trinity
sweep Southwestern in a two-game SCAC weekend series this past
Friday and Saturday.
Early was 2-6 with four RBI in the game, while Jonathan Hall had
two hits and three runs scored. Kevin Jackson had three hits
and three runs, while Nick Pappas was 2-5 with two runs scored.
Chris Walden had another outstanding game for Trinity, going 4-5
with three RBI. John Paillet and Patrick Frasier both had two
hits, and while Paillet scored three times, Frasier had two runs
and two RBI.
Clint Robertson (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Tigers,
throwing 2.2 scoreless innnings. Robertson gave up just one
hit and a pair of walks, striking out four batters. Ryan
Lucero and Mike Hunter combined to strike out nine batters over the
final four innings to close out the game.
Trinity returns to action this weekend, taking on Austin College
in an important two-game SCAC series on the road. That will
open up four straight games on the road, before returning home
April 17-18 for the final games of the regular season against
Millsaps College.
