San Antonio – Three Trinity University
Tigers men have been selected to compete in the singles and doubles
tournaments of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships May 28-30
at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio.
Sophomore Max Frey of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall), will
represent the Tigers in the 32-draw NCAA singles tournament.
Juniors Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll); and Cory
Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson); are set for the 16-draw doubles
event.
Frey earned an NCAA bid to the 2009 tournament, and was
eliminated in the opening round. He is ranked No. 4 in the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association's West Region, with a 19-8
overall record (14-8 in dual matches).
Cocanougher and Kowal advanced to the 2009 NCAA doubles semifinals.
The Tiger duo became the first Trinity team to reach the NCAA
semifinals since 2001, when Sloan Rush and Ed Rahn accomplished
that feat. Cocanougher and Kowal stand at 23-7 overall, and 19-6 in
dual matches. They are ranked third in the West Region.
The 13th-ranked Trinity team, led by first-year head coach
Russell McMindes, begins play Saturday in the NCAA Whitewater
Regional, at Whitewater, Wis.
Trinity (16-9), which received a first-round bye, plays
the winner of Carleton College and the Milwaukee School of
Engineering at 9 a.m. Saturday in the second round, at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Carleton and MSOE open the
regional at 9 a.m. Friday. Host UW-Whitewater meets Wisconsin-Eau
Claire at 1 p.m. Friday, for the right to take on Kenyon at 2 p.m.
Saturday.
The winners of the second-round matches play in the regional
final Sunday at noon. At stake is a berth in the NCAA Team
Tournament, to be held May 24-27 at Oberlin. Forty-two teams are
vying for the national crown.
Trinity is playing in its 17th NCAA Tournament, and the first
since 2008. That year, Trinity advanced to the regional final at
Fredericksburg, Va. The Tigers, under head coach Butch Newman, had
played in 16 straight NCAA Tournaments. Coach Newman, now
Trinity's director of tennis, guided the Tiger men and women
to the national championship in 2000.
